14. Operation_________
A. Dual FMC Operation
(1)
In a dual FMC operation, one FMC operates as the primary FMC and one operates as the secondary FMC. Data is transfered between the FMCs over an RS-422 inner system bus. The primary and secondary FMCs are determined by the FMC source discrete inputs from the FMCS transfer relays. These are controlled by the FMC source select switch. The switch can be set to BOTH ON L, NORMAL, or BOTH ON R. BOTH ON L and BOTH ON R operate the system in a single FMC configuration, while NORMAL operates the system in a dual configuration.
(2)
When NORMAL is selected:
(a)
The left FMC is the primary FMC.
(b)
FMCS TRANSFER RELAY No. 1 supplies input from the left FMC to these systems: 1) Autothrottle Computer 2) SMC-1 3) Scanning DME-L 4) GPWC 5) DAA-1 6) FCC-1 7) DFDAU 8) CDU-1 9) CDU-2 10) EIS
(c)
FMCS TRANSFER RELAY No. 2 provides input from the right FMC to these systems: 1) SMC-2 2) Scanning DME-R 3) DAA-2 4) FCC-B
(d)
The systems shown below receive input from each FMC: 1) IRS-1 2) IRS-2 3) EFSG-1 4) EFSG-2

(e) The left EFIS display will show FMC-L and the right EFIS display will show FMC-R.
(3) When the source select switch is set to BOTH ON L or BOTH ON R, the FMCS operates as follows:
(a)
Operation is identical to a single FMC operation, with all functions done by the selected FMC.
(b)
The secondary FMC becomes the navigation monitor. Data will continue to be transmitted from the primary FMC to the secondary FMC.
(c)
The EFIS display will show FMC-L or FMC-R, depending on the position of the source select switch.
(d)
When the source select switch is moved, LNAV and VNAV will be disconnected.
B. Crossloading
(1) In the dual FMC installation, the RS-422 inner system bus can be used to crossload the op program or databases from the primary FMC to the secondary FMC. A crossload can be initiated from the CDU crossload pages. These pages can be accessed from the FMCS BITE 1/1 page.
C. Functional Description
(1)
An entire flight can be preplanned using the FMCS. A complete lateral flight plan may be selected from the FMC's navigation data base. The lateral routing may be modified manually, with assistance from the search capability in the FMC data base. The FMCS accommodates route revisions in Air Traffic Control (ATC) clearance language.
(2)
The vertical portion of the route can be automatically preplanned by the FMCS using speed and altitude targets optimized for flight cost economy. The operator can modify the FMCS's default values, to tailor the vertical segment schedules to the requirements of each day's flight. The economy Cost Index can be adjusted to compensate for time lost by gate or ATC flow control delays, and yet still operate throughout the flight with the maximum cost savings consistent with conditions.
(3)
Once a complete route is planned and activated, the FMCS provides guidance with respect to current speed and steering command targets. The system also tracks estimated time of arrival (ETA) and fuel remaining at route waypoints and the destination. The operator can monitor these data and other reference information and make decisions concerning options available during continuance of the flight. Should it become necessary to deviate from the route originally planned, revisions can be entered at any time. Thus, the FMCS can accommodate most contingencies in ATC routing changes, such as weather diversions, and still provide low-workload automatic flight control.
