 F. Scratch Pad Usage and Line Select Keys
 (1)  
All manual data entries appear initially in the scratch pad area of the display. In the scratch pad they can be verified and, if necessary, edited. Entry of the data into the operational display is accomplished by pressing an appropriate line select key (LSK). Twelve LSKs are provided on the CDU panel, six to the left and six to the right of the display screen. The placement of the LSKs aligns them with the third, fifth, seventh, ninth, eleventh, and thirteenth lines of the display. Data entries are permitted in those lines only, and in any given display the LSKs are active only at those locations in which entries are permitted or required. Some displays provide menus of function or mode options that can be selected by the operator, and in these cases the LSKs are used to accomplish that selection.

In addition to transferring data from the scratch pad up to the data display, the LSKs can be used to duplicate data from the display lines into the scratch pad. This is done when the scratch pad is blank, simply by pressing the LSK associated with the data desired for duplication in the scratch pad. The data appears in the scratch pad and, by use of the LSKs, may then be transferred up to another data line of the display from which it was selected; or to any other display with data fields for which it is valid.

 G. Delete Key
 (1)  The delete (DEL) key is a special-purpose key which is used to remove data from a display (and thus a flight plan) after the data has been line selected and accepted into a data field. If the scratch pad is empty, pressing the DEL key will write "DELETE" into the scratch pad. The delete process is hence complete when the operator line-selects (by LSK the data item to be removed. If the deletion is a valid one, the data field reverts to its default value (box prompts, dashes, or a system-generated value). If the DEL key is used incorrectly, the system will prevent the operator from making a mistake. Selection of the wrong LSK on a page in which the delete operation is valid for at least one display parameter, will bring up an INVALID DELETE message in the scratch pad. Pressing the DEL key when the displayed page has no valid delete operation evokes no response. The DEL key must be pressed once for each parameter to be deleted.
 H.  Lighted Annunciators There are four annunciators on the front of the CDU. These annunciators are MSG, FAIL OFST, and DSPY. The message (MSG), offset (OFST) and display (DSPY) annunciators are white in color, and the FAIL annunciator is amber. The MSG light comes on to indicate the presence of an alert or advisory message, and will stay on until the message is cleared. The FAIL light comes on if there is system failure detected by the built-in-test. The OFST light will be on any time an offset is active. The DSPY light is not used.
 I. CDU Inputs and Outputs
 (1)  Inputs and outputs of the control display unit are characterized by ARINC 429 Digital Information Transfer System (DITS) standard.
 J. Monitor
 (1)  An on-line Built-In Test (BIT) operates continuously as a background task in the CDU. These tests are automatic and require no initialization by the operator. The tests provide a program memory checksum test that adds all of the program memory, to verify that the sum is equal to an expected value. In addition, the tests ensure that the power supply provides adequate power to operate the CDU display and logic circuits. The tests also verify that the CRT horizontal and vertical synchronization pulse timing is correct. ARINC digital input/output channels are also tested to ensure data is properly received and transmitted. If any of the on-line test fail, the CDU blanks.

 K.  CDU Internals (Fig. 8)

Digital CRT controller and ARINC interface circuits generate characters and symbols, for display on the CRT screen. These circuits also transfer ARINC 429 digital data.
