 A. Functional Description
 (1)
An entire flight can be preplanned using the FMCS. A complete lateral flight plan may be selected from the FMC's navigation data base. The lateral routing may be modified manually, with assistance from the search capability in the FMC data base. The FMCS accommodates route revisions in Air Traffic Control (ATC) clearance language.

 (2)
The vertical portion of the route can be automatically preplanned by the FMCS using speed and altitude targets optimized for flight cost economy. The operator can modify the FMCS's default values, to tailor the vertical segment schedules to the requirements of each day's flight. The economy Cost Index can be adjusted to compensate for time lost by gate or ATC flow control delays, and yet still operate throughout the flight with the maximum cost savings consistent with conditions.

 (3)
Once a complete route is planned and activated, the FMCS provides guidance with respect to current speed and steering command targets. The system also tracks estimated time of arrival (ETA) and fuel remaining at route waypoints and the destination. The operator can monitor these data and other reference information and make decisions concerning options available during continuance of the flight. Should it become necessary to deviate from the route originally planned, revisions can be entered at any time. Thus, the FMCS can accommodate most contingencies in ATC routing changes, such as weather diversions, and still provide low-workload automatic flight control.

 B. Control
 (1)  Prepare FMCS for Flight
 (a)  Provide external electrical power to airplane and energize buses on the P6 and P18 circuit breaker panels.
CAUTION: ENSURE EQUIPMENT COOLING IS OPERATED BEFORE TURN ON OF
_______ ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS OR DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT MAY RESULT. EQUIPMENT COOLING SYSTEM MUST BE SET FOR NORMAL COOLING.
ENSURE THAT COOLING AIR IS AVAILABLE TO IRS NAVIGATION UNITS BEFORE OPERATING IRS. FAILURE TO PROVIDE ADEQUATE AIR SUPPLY WILL RESULT IN FAILURE OF NAVIGATION UNITS.
 (b)
Provide cooling air to electronic equipment (Ref 21-58-00).

 (c)
Ensure all IRS circuit breakers are closed.

 (d)
Position both IRS mode select switches to align.

 (e)
To turn on FMCS, close all FMCS circuit breakers.

The following procedures use the CDU screen display to initialize the FMC.

 (g)
At initial turn on, the IDENT page will be displayed on the CDU. This provides a means of reviewing the FMC data base, current NAV data base and type of engines installed. Check information for accuracy.

 (h)
Press line select key (LSK) 6R (POS INIT>). This provides access to data pages, for initialization of the FMCS.

 (2)  Position Initialization
 (a)  When POS INIT page is displayed, enter present position latitude and longitude into the SET IRS POS data field. Present position can be entered by either of the three following ways: selecting the stored LAST POS, entering and ICAO identifier, or direct entry. 1) The FMC NV RAM memory stores the last position determined
by the FMCS at completion of the previous flight. If the airplane has not moved significantly since shut-downs this last position (LAST POS) may be line-selected into the CDU scratch pad, by pressing line select key 1R, then enter into the SET IRS POS data field by pressing line select key 4R.
 2)  Entry of an airport identifier, contained in the navigation data base, into the REF AIRPORT data field will bring up on the display that airport's reference position, for selection into the SET IRS POS data field.
 3)  Present position can be manually entered into the scratch pad, by using the CDU keyboard keys. The data can then be entered into the SET IRS POS, by pressing line select key 4R.
 (b)
If an IRS does not accept the FMCS initialization, a RE-ENTER IRS POS message appears in the scratch pad, indicating that the operator should repeat the procedure, after clearing the scratch pad.

 (c)
The FMC automatically receives and displays Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) data from the airplanes GMT clock system. The time displayed on the CDU can, however, be changed to display local time, while GMT remains inputed to the FMC data base. 1) The FMCS will accept for display the hours portion of the
