 (b)
The primary parts of the processor card are the processor and the Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC). The processor is a 32 bit processor with floating point unit, instruction and data caches, and a memory management unit.

 (c)
The ASIC was designed to reduce the parts count, power dissipation, and improve reliability. The ASIC includes many of many of the functions that were formerly done by discrete components and ICs. The processor board also includes a minimum of 128 kbyte of NVROM and 512 kbyte of capacitor backed RAM that will be held at least 15 minutes.

 (3)
Memory Card

 (a)  The memory card contains the memory used for the Operational Flight Program, the Navigation Database (NDB), and the Performance Database. This memory is comprised of flash type EEPROM , which must be written to in blocks, and has a software write protect feature.

 (4)
ARINC I/O Card

 (a)  The ARINC I/O card includes an ASIC (which is the primary board controller and functional center) 16 ARINC 429 drivers, 32 ARINC 429 input translators, 4 discrete input hybrids, and hardware for 3 output discetes. The ARINC I/O card does all the functions associated with the input/output for the FMC.

 F. Navigation Data Base
 (1)
The FMCS navigation data base is stored in the NV RAM memory of the FMC, in two parts. One part contains active permanent data, which is effective until a specified expiration date; the other part contains a set of data revisions for the next period of effectivity. These effectivity dates can be displayed on the CDU. The set of data for the current period of effectivity is selected as the active navigation data base, in order to enable the navigation and guidance functions.

 (2)
The navigation data base contains all information required for operation in a specified geographic area. This information includes data for:

 (a)
VOR, DME, VORTAC, and TACAN navigation aids

 (b)
Waypoints

 (c)
Airports and runways

 (d)
Terminal area procedures and approaches.

 (e)
Enroute airways

 (f)
Holding patterns

 (g)
Company route structures

 (3)
As a supplement to the content of the permanent current navigation data base (and data base revisions); the system will accept operator-entered data for additional navigation aids, waypoints, and airports. These entries will be retained in the FMC memory until modified or deleted by the operator.

 (4)
Data Base Update Loading

 (a)
Upon the expiration date of the navigation database, a new navigation database should be loaded into the FMC. The new database must be valid for the next period of effectivity.

 (b)
When the airplane is on the ground, an external portable data loader can be connected to a flight deck mounted electrical receptacle. Connecting the loader to the receptacle allows the loader to load and update the navigation data base, without removing the FMC from the airplane.

 G. Operational Flight Program
 (1)  The Operational Flight Program (Op Program) is the software in the FMC which does these functions:
 (a)
Built-in Test (BIT)

 (b)
Control/Display

 (c)
Navigation

 (d)
Input/Output

 (e)
Electronic Flight Instrument System (EFIS) Interface

 (f)
Flight Plan Management

 (g)
Lateral Steering

 (h)
Predict Profile
