 A.  The central instrument warning system (CIWS) monitors warning flag signals from the other navigation systems and displays failure of the flag signals on a separate CIWS annunciator. The system also detects and annunciates selected out-of-tolerance conditions using flight instrument information.

 A.  The ground proximity warning system (GPWS) provides the pilots with aural and visual warning of potentially dangerous flight paths relative to the ground such as inadvertent descent close to the ground, level flight or too shallow climb towards rising terrain, excessive rate of descent, and deliberate descent in unsuspected proximity to the ground.
 17. Periscopic Sextant Mount (34-49-00) A28460-00-002
________________________
 A.  The periscopic sextant mount provides direct access from the flight deck to the outside atmosphere as a provision for using a periscopic sextant.

 A.  The air traffic control (ATC) system, when interrogated by a ground station, automatically transmits a pulse coded signal to the ground station containing airplane altitude and identity information. This signal is displayed on a PPI used by ground personnel to monitor airplane traffic.

 A.  The DME (distance measuring equipment) system is used to determine aircraft distance from a VOR/DME ground station. An interrogator unit in the aircraft transmits a pulse coded signal to the ground station which triggers a time delayed reply. The time interval between the interrogating signal and ground station reply is measured and displayed as distance on a digital or analog indicator.

__________ LH ALL EXCEPT 051-070, 081-099; AZ, IB, SN ALL)
 A.  The automatic direction finder (ADF) system is used to determine airplane bearing from a conventional broadcast or low range radio station. The radio signal is simultaneously received by an omnidirectional sense antenna and a bidirectional loop antenna and resolved into a single component representing the angular position of the radio station. This station bearing is displayed relative to airplane magnetic heading on the airplane radio magnetic indicator (RMI).

 NAVIGATION - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
______________________________________

 1.  General
_______
 A.  The navigation systems are those systems used to determine and display the attitude, altitude, and position of the airplane with respect to the earth's surface. The navigation systems fall in the following general categories:
 (1)
Those systems which sense and display flight environmental data.

 (2)
Those systems which determine airplane attitude and direction.

 (3)
Those systems which provide landing and taxiing aids.

 (4)
Those systems which are self-contained and independent of ground-based equipment.

 (5)
Those systems which are dependent upon and operate in conjunction with ground-based equipment.

 B.  The various navigation units are located in four main equipment centers throughout the aircraft and are remotely controlled and displayed from the flight compartment. These equipment centers are:
 (1)
Forward equipment center

 (2)
Main equipment center

 (3)
Forward center fuselage equipment center

 (4)
Aft center fuselage equipment center
