MONDAY MORNING
Carpenters’ Off Days are often times an
area of confusion. As we move into
2009, we would like to provide clarity
as this topic relates to our collective
bargaining agreements. Carpenters’
Off Days are not holidays that
automatically require premium pay
when work is performed. Rather, if
electricians are on a project with other
crafts that would receive premium pay
for performing work on a Carpenters’
Off Day, then electricians will also
receive premium pay (double
time). However, if an electrician is
working on a project on a Carpenters’
Off Day where no other trade would
receive premium pay, then premium
pay is not required for electricians.
Excerpt from #180 CBA – Section
3.02: In addition to the normal holiday
schedule, Carpenters’ Off-Days shall
be observed on jobs where there are
Carpenters observing those days as
non-work days. Carpenters’ Off-Days
shall not be observed on jobs where
nonunion general contractors require
the job to be manned on these days,
and straight time wages shall be paid
per the Agreement.
Excerpt from #595 CBA – Section 2
[3.02] Subsection (h): Where
electricians are working on a project
with other crafts who receive premium
pay for the Carpenters’ “off days,” the
electricians shall also receive premium
pay.
The 2009 Carpenters’ Off Day schedule
is as follows:
Friday - January 2, 2009
Friday - February 13, 2009
Friday - May 22, 2009
Friday - September 4, 2009
A 2009 schedule of holidays and
carpenter’s off days for agreements in
the chapter’s jurisdiction is available

KNOW YOUR AGREEMENT
CARPENTER’’S OFF DAYS
When we ask our electricians and
supervisors to manage our projects, we
hope they have the training, safety
knowledge and experience to protect our
financial interests from the beginning of
the project through to the end, and all
points in between. There will be difficult
decisions to be made, and some
decisions will require immediate action.
Without the training, safety background,
and actual experience, they are sure to
fail, and we as contractors, industry
advocates, industry supporters, and
union members will fail as well.
Continuous education and training must
become a standard within our industry
culture, and it must be understood that
education and training is the basis of
continued employment for all of us.
Along with the many other resources,
NorCal NECA continues to provide many
training programs, which will provide the
necessary skills for our field and office
team members, from Estimating, Project
Management, Electrical Project
Supervision, First Aid/CPR, OSHA 30 and
NFPA 70E. Each of these courses will
assist our captains in making the
necessary decisions every minute of
every day.
During this temporary economy, when
risk has become more amplified,
knowing our people are better trained
and prepared to manage our projects,
may provide the confidence in being
more competitive at bid time and more
successful on our projects.
If education and experience is power,
and power is the product that we provide
our customers, then the time is now to
train our people. Enclosed in this
publication is a list of upcoming training
courses.
