A monthly publication of the Northern Cal i f o r n i a Chapter, NECA
INVESTING IN THE FUTURE: On January 15, 2009,
Captain Chelsey “Sully” Sullenberger methodically
crash landed US Airways flight 1549 onto the
Hudson River with all 155 passengers surviving.
Many called the landing the Miracle on the
Hudson, while Sully down-played the miracle story
claiming that the landing was what he trained for
in his years as a pilot. Based upon Sully’s resume,
he began his career in the Air Force where he
trained to be a pilot and graduated to become a
Flight Leader and Training Officer. He moved from
the Public sector to Private industry and began a career with US
Airways as a Pilot, then Captain of the Airbus A319/320/321. Sully
spearheaded many advancements within the airlines industry and
became heavily involved educating himself in his career decision.
Along the way, many other pilots learned from Sully’s tireless
education and experiences.
So what does this story have to do with electrical contracting? We
all have a choice. We can accept that our people become the
passenger, or we can coach them to become our Sullys and
captains. We, the contractors and business managers, need to
continuously train our leaders within our industry. We then need to
continue to provide these leadership opportunities to our pilots and
captains.
There is a significant movement by the IBEW and NECA around the
country to train our electricians, engage them in protecting our
financial interests, protect our greatest resources—our people, and
prepare them for the daily miracles on the construction jobsite.
During slow times other industries re-tool, they refine their
processes, and they prepare for the next wave of work. Our industry
is no different, but the product that we have to offer our customers
is a qualified, progressive, and productive electrician who values
the customer and their employers’ interests.
