that work experience should also be taken into
account, in conjunction with the GPA.
Professors Thomson and Verter were concerned
which criteria could be used to measure
professional performance. It was suggested the
students and their abilities of analysis, problemsolving
and decision-making could be observed
at close range during case studies and course
projects. Sponsor companies would then have
input into which students would be most
qualified to receive performance awards.
This year the MMM program instituted a series
of Professional Development Seminars. Students
receive instruction and guidance in making
effective presentations as well as an introduction
to North American business practices. The latter
aspect is specifically of interest to international
students. The sponsors agreed that these
seminars were germane to the program and that
they should be vigorously promoted.
At last year’s meeting, sponsors had mentioned
that all MMM students should have a profound
knowledge of the Internet and E-commerce. This
year the program is offering a new course, The
Internet and Manufacturing, replacing
Management of Technology which was basically
a survey course. Professor Shanling Li described
the course and requested assistance from the
sponsors in providing students with projects
related to the Internet and E-commerce.
Corporate representatives were informed of the
students’ desire to establish the MMM Alumni
Society which would provide a powerful
networking opportunity. Since university
regulations require a minimum of 25 members,
this society may only become viable in another
year.
MMM, McGill University 2 Newsletter, September – October 2000
A lengthy discussion ensued about the Executive
Performance Workshops currently being set up.
These would focus on time-based
manufacturing, logistics and manufacturing
technologies. Sponsors felt that emphasis should
be on worldwide perspectives and actual rather
than conceptual evidence in the form of virtual
visits.
Professor Vedat Verter described the progress
being made in establishing the MMM program
in Singapore, Mexico and Egypt. Academic
representatives from these countries had
approached the MMM directors because a North
American degree is perceived as highly
desirable. The program would be on a part-time
basis for working executives. Registration,
course content and hiring of staff would be
controlled by McGill. Local organizations would
market the program, provide teaching facilities
and program administration. Students would
receive a McGill degree.
Upon completion of the discussion on
innovations, the MMM program welcomed its
newest sponsor, Celestica. This brings the total
number of sponsors to 13. Corporate
representatives then viewed the Chart of
Activities which provided a synopsis of all
contributions in the form of seminars, case
studies, plant tours and work terms. In this
respect the 1999-2000 academic year had been
highly successful and companies were requested
to provide a repeat in the upcoming year.
In the area of communications, sponsors were
informed that MMM representatives wanted to
provide information sessions for their employees
this year. When the program was originally
formulated, one of its express intentions was to
educate promising corporate employees in
manufacturing management. Because this is
developing rather slowly, information sessions
are perceived as likely vehicles for popularizing
the program.
In the next few months a new MMM brochure
and web site will be finalized. Sponsors were
requested to provide the MMM office with
testimonials and anecdotal stories. Photos with
high-tech content were also requested with
assurances that security considerations would be
respected. Sponsors were also asked to
implement links between their web sites and the
new MMM web site.
A formal request was made for sponsors to
provide seminars, case studies and project/study
opportunities. In the past year students had high
praise for these elements of the program. So far
only Merck Frosst had agreed to facilitate a case
study in February 2001. The coordinator would
be contacting all sponsors in the next few days
to organize a schedule for the new academic
year.
Sponsors were apprised of the schedule of plant
tours outside Montreal. One sponsor asked
whether industry employees could participate in
these tours. Other corporate attendees voiced a
similar request. It was agreed that MMM would
