documentary, Outfoxed, on the Murdoch news operations
looks in detail at how that organisation manipulates news
to send out messages that are favourable towards conservative
politicians. Unions are not often presented in a
favourable light in the mainstream media and, while they
can improve their skills in media management, they are
still at the mercy of private media interests that often are
opposed to unions’ raison d’être.
And of course, there is also no escaping the fact that
unions will often only get a mention in the mainstream
media when there is a strike or a dispute. Union publications
are an opportunity to tell the “good news” stories
that will otherwise remain known only to the members
concerned.
“The AMWU News certainly plays a role in promoting the
notion that members are part of something big,” says Julius
Roe. “As union offi cials, we tend to forget that for a lot of
people the union is something that happens in their workplace.
The journal gives them an insight into the activities
of union members all around the country.”
Usage of the Internet may be growing, but for different
reasons the majority of unions still see the value of producing
a journal. It is one way that unions can remind even the
most passive member of the fact that they belong to this
organisation that is doing a lot of valuable work.
In these very challenging times for unions, where many
are struggling to recruit and retain their membership, the
importance of telling their message and telling it well is not
just an adjunct to the work of unions. It’s becoming central
to their operations.
