3. Subcommittee Reports.
Conferences:
Pat & Don representing committee to SDM. Pat Googan presenting. Things going very smoothly this
year; program developed last fall. Will be held at Windham hotel in Palm Springs; all conference rooms
are close together. Only problem is that it's 2 hours drive from LA. Best to fly to Ontario or to Palm
springs itself. Tried to limit number of concurrent sessions, able to get it down to 13. Overall acceptance
ratio is 85 to 90%. Have been asked to organize special session honoring recently deceased well-known
and liked STC member Jim Starnes. Airbus 380 keynote speaker. Tried to get Burt Rutan unsuccessfully.
Trying to get Airforce tactical arena. More than 50% of TC's getting reviewers for papers. This is primary
responsibility of TC members. Going to try to get conference fee to pay for Jefferson Goblet Award. CD's
of papers going out after conference so that it'll have all papers including walk-on papers; only 1 conf/CD.
Will also have access to website with papers. Going to try to provide some computers at conference to
look at papers then. One common theme in comments from last conference was too many parallel
aeroelasticity sessions; trying hard to avoid this. People who are not TC members are being sent papers to
review without being asked first - this is problem. Also there is a problem with not enough explicit
instructions on how to review papers. Electronic abstract submittal much easier for conference organizers.
All papers require 3 reviews. 83% accepted for st. dyn (134) - some abstracts sent back to author if time
allows. Anyone with suggestions on abstracts should send them to Paul Taylor in long-range planning. We
can express a committee opinion. No “work in progress” section, too few proposed in past. There has been
some suggestion that we draft a position for a higher rejection rate. James Locke suggested assigning
representatives for particular sessions (???).

Publications
No report submitted.
Liason –
Adaptive Structures - book going out; Norm Wirley contact
Smart Structures database published.
Applied Aerodynamics – planning several workshops
Flight Test – nothing
Materials – nothing
Ground Test – few applications for student competition. Outreach CD distributed.
Structures – Lean certification subcommittee (renamed “efficient certification”) organized; Using “ad-hoc”
instead of permanent subcommittees now. Non-Deterministic Approaches will be upgraded to a TC; want
capability to look at abstract comments. Two special presentations at SDM on new website.
4. Secretariat
Ms. Teresa Kinney circulated a roster for corrections and acknowledgement of attendance. Present balance
$1085, $5K went for outreach CD production. $12K is available for CD distribution.
5. Education
Dan Worth presented report. Paul Taylor is not going to have aircraft loads class this year, as he felt
limited audience had already been reached in recent years; will pick up again in future.
Advances on web page presented. Includes on-line interactive experiments for high-school seniors &
freshman in college. Much improved from previous version - reviewed by group of teachers; template
provided to make it easier to generate. Includes a few animations. Going to get MSC to help, also help
from Media Graphics, Inc. We have about ½ of what is needed. Members of TC solicited to send in
powerpoint presentation of material for inclusion. Waiting for input on several topics. Teresa will send
out list of topics. Discussion on curriculum of undergraduates held, with concern that no requirement for
Mechanical Vibrations is presently in any engineering curriculum. Dr. John K? took action to find out who
AIAA’s representative on ABET is to try to get some influence on curriculum (in particular, to get some
more basic engineering science into it).
6. Tech Transfer
Hyoung-Man Kim presented report. Updating Tech Transfer manual; ;redid goal/charter. We now have a
Structural Dynamics References website that is inoperable, so this needs to be updated. Dr. Kim has just
sent out an email to TC members requesting input for useful Structural Dynamics web links for inclusion in
site; wants at least one site name, with 1 line description, from everyone.
7. Standards & Best Practices
Teresa Kinney presented report. Trying to generate paper on Standards for Model Test/Analysis
correlation. Dr. Pete Avitable, Dr. Ewins, have been consulted – they agree that “one size does not fit all”,
but there is general agreement that a set of guidelines would be extremely helpful, with goal that a white
