“The reasons women join a union are
very different. Many women don’t want
to join saying ‘my husband is already in
a union’. So we need to start by convincing
her that she is someone separate
from her husband with her own needs
and rights. We need to show how being
organised gives her the power to participate,”
explains Emília.
In Brazil there are many barriers
to women’s participation in the union.
For historical reasons women think
the union is for men. Most union work
and activities occur outside work
hours, which can be difficult for women
with family commitments. “Dealing
with these issues will take time and
each union will be different; some fast,
some slow,” said Emília. “But the permanent
campaign is already showing
results. By the end of August, one of
our unions had organised an additional
3,000 women as members.”
One reason for women to increase
their participation in the union in Brazil
is the enormous differences in the
rates of pay between men and women,
which are even greater for black and
indigenous women. Another big issue
is violence against women. For Emília
issues such as these are all connected
to the broader struggles women face
in Brazil. “Improving women’s selfesteem
and sense of worth is central
to ending the cycle of violence and to
enabling women to understand the
important role we play in Brazilian
society today,” she said. “Working on
the self-esteem of women is also where
we need to start when organising.”
