AFFILIATES Echoing words
Consider this quote: “If we desire
to make our federation more active
internationally then we have to presuppose
three factors: firstly, strong
national organisations; secondly,
genuine international thought and
action, i.e. to be ready for the highest
degree of international solidarity;
and thirdly, the recognition that
a conflict of our comrades in Spain
or in France is also our conflict in
Germany or in Poland.” Now guess
where this quote is from? The secretariat’s
report to the next IMF Congress?
A trade unionist addressing
a recent IMF meeting? No. This
quote is from Robert Dissmann, an
IMF Executive member, addressing
our Congress in 1924 in Vienna,
Austria. Eighty years later, the
statement is still valid.
Sifting through reports from IMF
congresses held in Vienna in 1924
and 1964 conveys a feeling of déjàvu.
Were it not for the yellowish
pages and old-fashioned design, the
issues and agenda items feel familiar
and current: gains in working time
threatened, structural changes in the
world economy, activities for women
workers, the list goes on.
As reported on page 11, “Advancing
workers’ rights” is the theme for
next year’s IMF Congress. While
this is the core mission of the IMF, it
may seem ironic when the same
agenda items recur
time and again at
IMF congresses.
But workers’ rights
of today would
seem utopian to our
members in 1924.
From any point of
departure, advancing
workers’ rights
is our common
objective.
