in an aircraft between two points.
aircraft category for fire fighting
One determined under section
303.05 for fighting fires involving
aircraft.
aircraft emergency
A situation that could result in
damage to an aircraft at an airport or
aerodrome or injury to people on
board it.
aircraft fire-fighting standards
The Aerodrome and Airport Standards
respecting Aircraft Fire Fighting at
Airports and Aerodromes.
aircraft flight manual
A manual, under Part V of CARs,
containing information about an
aircraft.
airport
An aerodrome with an airport
certificate issued under Subpart 2 of
Part III.
airship
A power-driven, lighter-than-air
aircraft.
airside
An area designated by the operator
of an airport or aerodrome as a
movement area and areas next door,
not including a building used for the
maintenance of aircraft, or one used
for the movement of passengers.
airway
Airspace within the boundaries or
along tracks in the Designated Airspace
Handbook within which ATC service
is provided.

airworthiness limitation
One for an aeronautical product, in
the form of a life limit or
maintenance task required as part of
the type certificate.
airworthy
With regard to an aeronautical
product, in a fit and safe state for
flight, as per its type design.
all-engines-operating take-off
distance
That from the start of the take-off
roll to when the aeroplane reaches
the height above the runway
elevation in the basis of its
certification.
all-engines-operating take-off run
That from the start of the take-off
roll to midway between the lift-off
point and the end of the all-enginesoperating
take-off distance (see above).
alternate aerodrome
One to which a flight may proceed
when landing at the destination is
inadvisable.
altimeter setting region
Low level airspace in the Designated
Airspace Handbook in which a
common altimeter setting is used.
appliance
Any instrument, mechanism,
equipment, apparatus or accessory
used (or intended to be used) in
operating or controlling an aircraft in
flight, installed in or attached to (or
intended to be) the aircraft, not part
of the airframe, engine or propeller.
appropriate frequency
The radio frequency specified by an
ATC unit or FSS for use by a PIC, a
mandatory frequency at or near an
aerodrome, or that in the Canada Air
Pilot or the Canada Flight Supplement.
apron
Part of an aerodrome (not
manoeuvring area), for loading and
unloading passengers and cargo,
refuelling, servicing, maintenance
and parking of aircraft and
movement of aircraft, vehicles and
people in relevant services.
APU
Auxiliary power unit. Any power
unit delivering rotating shaft power
or compressed air, or both, not
intended for direct propulsion of an
aircraft.
Arctic Control Area
Controlled airspace in the Northern
Domestic Airspace, as laid out in the
Designated Airspace Handbook.
