Foreign Applicants
Your aeroplane licence is the
equivalent of the ground school,
written exam and skill requirements
if you otherwise have the experience,
get over 90% in PSTAR, and have
(in aeroplanes) at least 5 take-offs
and landings in the last 6 months.

Privileges
You may, under day VFR, act as:
· PIC of a single-engined
helicopter endorsed in your
licence, with only one passenger
and no external load.
· PIC or co-pilot of any aircraft,
but only for training or testing if
no passengers are carried,
except an instructor or examiner
conducting training or testing.
Private Pilot Licence -

Unless otherwise mentioned,
references to training and experience
concern the appropriate class of
aircraft.
Privileges
You may act as:
· PIC or co-pilot of aeroplanes or
helicopters on your licence
· PIC of an ultra-light (aeroplane
licence only).

Age
You must be at least seventeen.
Medical Fitness and Validity
You must hold a Category 3
Medical, which is valid for 24
months if you are under 40 and 12
months if you are over. The licence
is maintained by a Category 1 or 3
Medical Certificate.
Knowledge
You must complete at least 40 hours
ground school, covering the usual
stuff, and get at least 60% in the
mandatory areas of the PPAER or
PPHEL exam.
Experience
You need at least 45 hours training
under an appropriate instructor, up
to 5 on an approved simulator. At
least 17 hours must be dual,
including at least 3 cross-country and
5 instruments, of which up to 3 may
be instrument ground time, and 12
hours must be solo, including 5
cross-country with one at least 150
nm (100 for helicopters), to include
2 full stops at points other than the
departure.
Skill
You must have done a flight test in
the last 12 months, to the Flight Test
Standard Private and CPLs—Aeroplanes
(TP2655E), or Helicopters (TP3077E).
Credits
Knowledge
If you already hold a Permit for
Gyroplanes or a private or higher
pilot licence for the other class, your
40 hours of ground instruction is
reduced to 20. Instead of doing the
PPAER/PPHEL exam, you can get
at least 60% in PARAC/PHRAC
(Alternate Category).
Experience
You must have at least 30 hours in
the same class. However, a permit or
licence in another category allows
you to claim:
Helicopter/Aeroplane and
Gyroplane
Up to 15 hours towards the
total time and up to 4 hours
solo, 2 of which must be
credited to solo cross-country.
Glider
Up to 5 hrs PIC towards total
time.
Three Axis Ultra-light
Up to 10 hrs PIC towards total
time.
Instrument Flight
If you have a private or higher
licence in another category, the
instrument time acquired there
may be claimed (if not already
credited) towards the 17 hrs
dual or 12 solo.
DND Applicants
Whether active or retired, your wings
or completion of the Basic Flying
Course of around 120 hours is the
equivalent of the ground school,
written exam, course and skill

requirements, if you have the
experience, which must include at
least 10 hours in the appropriate
class in the last 12 months, and you
get at least 90% in PSTAR or the
Student Permit exams (aeroplanes).
If you have done aeroplane flight
training in the Canadian Forces, you
may be credited with military dual
and solo flight and ground school
time towards the knowledge and
experience requirements for the PPL
- Aeroplane.
Licence Issued on Foreign Licence
You are exempt the ground school,
written exam and skill requirements
if your licence is Private or higher,
and not issued on the basis of one
from yet another State. You must
also obtain at least 90% in the
Student or PSTAR exams and have
done (as PIC in aeroplanes) at least 5
take-offs and landings in the last 6
months.
Your licence will indicate its basis on
the foreign licence until you pass
PPAER or PPHEL and the skill
