requirements.
Credits for Foreign Applicants
You are exempt ground school and
experience requirements if you hold
a Private or higher licence. If not,
you may still be credited with foreign
dual and solo (aeroplane) flight and
ground school time towards
knowledge and experience for the
PPL - Aeroplane, with certification
from a Flight Instructor that all
ground and flight training has been
satisfactorily reviewed.
Reimbursement of Costs
As a PPL holder, you may only take
money (or the equivalent) to act as a
pilot of aeroplanes or helicopters if:
·  you own or operate the aircraft
and the flight is for purposes
other than hire or reward, that
is, passengers are only carried
incidentally. Only the passengers
may share costs for fuel, oil and
fees against the aircraft.
·  you are employed full-time for
another (i.e. not flying) purpose,
or you are a volunteer for a
charitable, non-profit or public
security organization and the
flying is incidental. If you own
the aircraft, you must be paid at
a rate based on distance
travelled or hours flown, up to
DOCs and fees charged against
the aircraft. If you rent it, you
can include the rental costs.
Foreign Licences - 421.07
For non-residents. A Foreign Licence
Validation Certificate is normally valid
for a year. You must provide the
licence, a letter of request, and the
reasons why it is needed, such as
flight testing, private flying, ferrying,
etc. If the medical lasts longer than
the ICAO standard, the validation is
limited to Canadian airspace, and the
validation period to no longer than
the Canadian medical.
Night Rating - 401.42/421.42
For the PPL, as you need a
minimum amount for the CPL and
ATPL anyway.
Experience
You must have at least 20 hours,
including at least 10 at night, to
184 Canadian Private Pilot Studies
include at least 5 hours dual (with 2
hours cross-country), and 5 hours
solo, including 10 takeoffs, circuits
and landings, and 10 hours dual
instrument time.
Up to 5 of the 10 hours dual
instruments may be instrument
ground time, as long as it is on top
of the night time.
Skill
In the last 12 months, you must have
successfully completed a qualifying
flight under a Transport Canada
Inspector or other suitably qualified
person by demonstrating the skills in
the Flight Instructor Guide-Aeroplane
(TP 975).
Credits
If you have a night rating in another
category, the total of 20 hours is
reduced to at least 5 in the relevant
class, which must include at least 2
hours dual night, 1 hour solo night,
and 1 hour dual instruments, which
must be in addition.
Recency - 401.05/421.05
Unless you’re a flight engineer, you
must have acted as PIC or P2 in the
last 5 years, or 12 months if you do a
check ride (flight review) with an
instructor who certifies your log
book, and you pass any exams
required here, like PSTAR. The
review must include all items in the
flight test for normal issue.
The certification in the log book is:
“This is to certify that the skill
requirement for __________ (permit
or licence) has been met"
and must have the date, name,
signature and licence number of the
instructor.
You must also have passed a
recurrent training program within
the previous 24 months and, if you
carry passengers (that is, other than
an examiner), within the previous 6
months, in the same category and
class or equivalent simulator (unless
it’s a glider or balloon), have
performed 5 night or day take-offs
and landings (for a day flight), or 5
night take-offs and landings, if
wholly or partly by night.
The following count as a recurrent
training program:
·  a flight review conducted by an
instructor in the same category,
including all items for the initial
flight test.
·  attendance at a safety seminar
conducted by Transport Canada
·  participation in an approved
recurrent training program
designed to update knowledge
of human factors, meteorology,
flight planning and navigation,
and aviation regulations, rules
and procedures
·  completion of the most current
annual self-paced study program
in the Transport Canada Aviation
Safety Newsletter, which covers
the subjects referred to above.
