other two skills development. These are two of the most important skills a team can
and should have: Problem-solving and conflict-handling.
Here is a summary of the five most important group of team skills:
These skills need to be improved in order to achive better result. And this is
where teambuilding comes in.
For some people teambuilding may seem to be just some games and exercise
we do to have fun. Everybody has done some simulations, role-playing, case studies
and other training games in their lives. But teambuilding is more than that. It is a
method to improve skills among the group with exercises. Every teambuilding
exercise has its own goal, and whether we learn from them or not, it’s up to us. Of
course the exercises can not always reach their goals, and sometimes they bring
different result than we thought they would. A good teambuilding can bring the team
together, and can help to recognize the problems in the group.

The teambuilder
During the exercises the teambuilder’s task is very similar to a leader’s task.
The teambuilder has to be an observer and has to lead the group to a solution in a
not too obvious ways. It is very important that the group has to find the solutions
itself. The teambuilder’s part is just to help the group with that. He/she mustn’t make
the conclusion instead of the group. One can learn better from his/her experience.
The agenda and rules of teambuilding
Before starting the teambuilding it is necessary to write an agenda for the
programs. The first we have to decide the main goals of the exercises, what skills of
the group we want to improve. Then we can find some exercises for these goals. We
have to make sure that there is a balance between long and short games. Between
longer exercises we can put some energizing exercises. These are to relax our brain
between serious topics. The types of exercises depend on the group’s programs, the
time we have for teambuilding, the number of participants. A teambuilding always
starts with telling the basic rules. These rules are to make sure that nobody feels
his/herself inconvenient during the exercises. One of these rules is the rule of “Here
and now”. This means that everything that happens stays within the group. And if
anyone has a bad feeling about anything it should be discussed during the
teambuilding session. The other rules are constructed mainly to respect the others.

Some examples
1) Learning and understanding each other
In the beginning of teambuilding these exercises always need to be done. We
cannot work with each other without knowing each other. One of the first exercises
we had was a typical example of this group. In our exercise all people had to talk
to each other and find a thing they had in common. After collecting these things
they had to draw them in a matrix and explain what they were. In this way
everyone could see the whole group’s drawing. This is a game that helps
everybody to talk and communicate to each other. We talked about topics, which
we wouldn’t have talked about otherwise.
2) Trust and cooperating
Trust is a very important thing within a team. Without trusting each other we
cannot work together efficiently. But unfortunately it is very difficult to learn to trust in
your team members. There are many examples when people cannot move forward
with a problem because of lack of trust. We experienced this during a teambuilding
game called „tooth or nail”. This game is about the advantages of cooperating
instead of competing with each other. Two teams are suppose to agree with each
other in order to make as much points as they can. However they can lie to the other
team and get more points in the current round. But if they do this, the trust between
the groups is of course over. We had 4 teams in our group with 3-3-3-3 people.
Between 2 of the groups the cooperation went well. They trusted each other and they
collected many points equally. The other 2 teams however had a problem with
trusting each other. After the first lying between the team they couldn’t build up trust
again. For 4 rounds none of the teams got any points. This shows us how important
is not to loose the trust of each other. And it is important to see that we can achieve
much more with cooperating than with competing with each other.
3) Problem-solving
As we know in life problems always tend to occur. This is what usually happens in
companies. These problems need to be solved somehow. The team’s task is to solve
