"I see 'em Stone, watch for the contrails to vanish as they go inverted and begin their
inverted Immelmanns."
As Stone watched the Green Mountain Boys convert on EITAM flight he saw they
crossed flight paths with each other and then joined in Tac spread with the leader to
Moshe’s left and Dash 2 6000 feet to the right of Pharaoh’s Phantom. "Why the cross
turns Dad?"
"Just a good habit, they were checking each other's six o'clock position, they must have
a reason to believe someone else is out and about today. "
As Stone flew formation he heard a new voice on UHF say "Andrews Charlie". Stone
saw that Ramon's head and his father's head each looked down at their briefing guides.
As Chip's head came up he said "Andrews Charlie is the third option for the arrival at
Andrews. Due to good weather and low traffic saturation we will be entering the
overhead for Runway 01R and it looks like the Initial Point for the visual overhead
pattern is at 1700 feet over 'Clinton'.
"Just a wild guess, but is there any chance that town is a twin city? You know a
random pair of names from the Maryland phone book such as Clinton Rubins".
"Good headwork, Stone, but according to the briefing chart it is simply Clinton, and is
south and west of intersecting highways. When we get to that point Andrews Charlie
indicates we should be in echelon left with us in the lead, EITAM as dash 2 on the left
and then Lethal Lady as #3 and Lady 2 as dash-last. The Lethal Lady is aircraft 83-1165
and has more time than any other F16, around 7000 hours. It will be fun to see who's
driving. If you hear me say Doobie don't think of Willy Nelson or Skunk Baxter,
capeche?"
"I understand dad".
At that point Lethal Lady visually passed the lead to EITAM as Lady 2 joined to Lethal
Lady's left. Chips, of course, was thinking of two other lethal ladies who were in the
cross hairs of Mossad and Abel Danger. Ramon, in the right seat of EITAM, passed the
lead to Chips. Chips understood this was the time to come up on "Huntress control",
318.0, as they crossed the ADIZ. As he placed 318.0 in the UHF he told Stone on hot
mic "I've got the jet" as he wiggled the stick. With his palm facing Ramon he 'pushed'
the EITAM out into 'fighting wing' as he contacted Huntress on 318.0.
"Showtime check."
As EITAM, and the F16s responded "2,3,4" Chips mentioned to Stone "Showtime was
Randy Cunningham and Driscoll's call sign in Vietnam, I thought it sounds better than
'Coors'" which was not wasted on Stone as he realized where Steve Ritchie found
employment after the Air Force.
"Huntress, Showtime, 318.0, flight level 310 with 4, squawking 4321".
"Cleared direct to Clinton, maintain flight level 220 until feet dry, maintain 350 until
Clinton, cleared single freq approach Andrews Charlie, switch to 349.4, monitor guard,
welcome EITAM".
"Showtime, roger all, switch 349.4"
Three clicking mics responded and Showtime flight was now being watched by more
than just Huntress and FAA radars. EITAM's DSO was picking up the signature of a
NATO AWACS and a pair of CF18 radars. Chips checked the flight in as he started
descending as they flew over the coast of the outer shore just north of Accomac, Virginia.
"Showtime".
"2, 3, 4" came the responses in three different voices, two sounding New England-ish
and one sounding 'middle eastern'. Chips knew that Ramon was handling the radios as
Moshe had learned to sound very western while working in Washington with 'Ben'.
"Andrews, Showtime, flight of 4, Andrews Charlie, code in Dash 2".
"Showtime, cleared Andrews Charlie, monitor guard, Clinton 30 right at 10 miles.
Andrews monitoring" came the response from the Andrews command post, indicating
that all of Andrews C was in effect and no more communications were necessary prior to
landing. As Chips made a sweeping right turn to put Clinton on the nose at 5 miles,
Stone noticed the flight was tightening up at his father rolled out on a 010 course,
descended to 1700 feet MSL, and had the airspeed set at 450 knots. As Stone looked
down the left wingline he saw the windshield of the EITAM and both F16 helmets
forming a perfect line. Stone wondered what Moshe might have flown before that made
him so 'steady'. Loose lips sink ships. As Stone pondered that question he heard a
second flight checking in with the Command Post. "Andrews, Roach 05, point Clinton".
"Roger Roach 05, Andrews Charlie, Showtime and 'the code' in the overhead now.
