A. The mode selector unit (MSU) contains a mode selector and two indicating lamps mounted on an illuminated panel. The mode selector has five positions; OFF, STBY, ALIGN, NAV, and ATT. These positions are used to control operating modes of the INS. The two indicating lamps indicate operating status only when the mode selector is in the ALIGN position. The BAT lamp (red) will illuminate if the battery unit is not charged enough to sustain INS operation for a brief test period during INS alignment. If this lamp illuminates, the INS will shut down automatically. The READY NAV lamp (green) illuminates when the INS is automatically aligned to the desired accuracy, indicating that the mode selector can be advanced to the NAV position.

5. Control/Display Unit (Fig. 10)
____________________
A. The CDU (Fig. 10) contains a power supply, logic circuits, controls, indicators, and displays for manually inserting information into the INS and for displaying navigation information and system status information. Logic circuits in the CDU convert manual control operations into digital data signals and decode digital data signals for display.
B. The data displays are composed of lamps which indicate numbers, decimal points, degree symbols, left and right directions, and latitude or longitude directions. The data to be displayed is primarily selected by the eight position data selector. Data to be inserted into the computer is first loaded into the data displays by operating the keyboard. Display of the loaded data allows visual verification before inserting it into the computer. Pressing the INSERT key inserts the loaded data into the computer memory and the computer then resumes control of the data displays.
C. The keyboard consists of 10 keys which are used to load data into the data displays and FROM-TO display. The N, S, W, and E on keys 2, 8, 6, and 4 indicate direction of latitude and longitude. Keyboard illumination is controlled by a cabin lighting control. On airplanes with Delco CIVA-20, CIVA-25 or CIVA-28-A INS,
XA see *[1] and *[2], 34-41-00 page 1; the 3, 7 and 9 keys are also labeled FRQ, L/L and DME. These keys are used when DME station data is inserted. On airplanes with Delco CIVA-28A-2 INS, the 7 and 9 keys are labeled L/L and DME. These keys are used where DME station data is inserted.
D. The CLEAR key is used to cancel a data loading operation when erroneous data is inadvertently loaded into the left-hand data display, the right-hand data display, or the FROM-TO display. When the CLEAR key is pressed during a data loading operation, the computer resumes control of the applicable display and the loading operation can be restarted. The CLEAR key illumination intensity is controlled by the same cabin lighting control as the keyboard.
E. The INSERT key is used to insert loaded data into the computer. The lamp in the INSERT key is controlled by either the computer or by operation of the CDU controls. The INSERT key is illuminated at INS turn on and when the mode selector is downmoded to STBY indicating that present position data must be inserted before automatic alignment can be accomplished. The lamp in the INSERT key will go out after both present position latitude and longitude are inserted. The INSERT key also lights when the first keyboard key is pressed during any other data loading operation. The light goes out when either the data is inserted by pressing the INSERT key or cleared by pressing the CLEAR key.
F. The data selector has eight positions for selecting data to be displayed in the data displays. Three of these positions (POS, WAY PT, and DSRTK/STS) also allow data to be loaded into the data display and then inserted into the computer memory. The illuminated panel is controlled by the same cabin lighting control used for the keyboard and CLEAR key.
