(e) Repeat steps (c) and (d) for additional waypoint insertions. Set WPT switch to position 2 up to 9 consecutively while entering each successive waypoint.
(5) Initial Track Selection
(a) An initial track represents the route from the airplanes present position and the initial enroute waypoint. Select on each CDU an initial track as follows: 1) Verify that each CDU AUTO/MAN/RMT switch is set to MAN
or AUTO.
2) Press TK CHG pushbutton. Verify that TK CHG and INSERT pushbuttons come on. To cancel track change, press CLEAR pushbutton, or TK CHG again.
3) Press O DTK pushbutton then press the numbered pushbutton representing the initial enroute waypoint.
4) Verify that the CDU FROM/TO display shows the number inserted in step 3). If not, press CLEAR pushbutton and repeat steps 2) thru 4).
5) Initiate initial track by pressing INSERT pushbutton. Verify that INSERT and TK CHG pushbutton go out.
(6) INS Alignment (Fig. 18)
(a) When the display selector switch is set to DSR TK/STS, the right numerical display indicates the alignment status of the system. The INS automatically initiates a fine alignment sequence when the mode selector switch is set to ALIGN or NAV after present position entry procedures are completed. Perform the status check as follows: 1) Set display selector switch to DSR TK/STS. 2) Observe status number on right numerical display. The
number starts high (90) and decrements towards 01 as the
alignment progresses.
3) If the mode selector switch is set to ALIGN and the READY NAV annunciator comes on, the status is 02. Set mode selector switch to NAV, verify that READY NAV annunciator goes out and alignment status number changes to 01.
NOTE: If the status number changes from 02 to 10, the
____ READY NAV annunciator goes out and stays out until the status number again changes to 02.
4) If desired, the mode selector switch can be set directly to the NAV position from STBY as soon as present position coordinates have been inserted. The INS automatically enters the NAV mode upon completion of the alignment as indicated by an 01 status. The READY NAV light does not come on.

5) The INS is in the NAV mode and operating if the indicated status is 01.
CAUTION: DO NOT SET THE MODE SELECTOR SWTICH OUT OF NAV
_______ EXCEPT FOR SYSTEM MALFUNCTION. IF SYSTEM IS, AT ANY TIME, SWITCHED OUT OF NAV MODE, THE ALIGNMENT MUST BE REPEATED WITH THE MODE SELECTOR CYCLED THROUGH OFF POSITION AND THE AIRPLANE IN A STATIC POSITION.
NOTE: On airplanes with INS programs 72-50-01, 72-50-02,
____ 72-50-03, and 72-50-04, when the INS is in the navigate (NAV) mode, the CDU FROM/TO display will flash if waypoints are not entered and a track leg is not inserted.
(7) INS Shut Down
(a) Place mode selector in OFF position.
CAUTION: FAILURE TO MOVE MODE SELECTOR TO OFF WILL CAUSE INS
_______ TO AUTOMATICALLY SWITCH TO BATTERY POWER WHEN POWER IS REMOVED FROM THE AIRPLANE.
(b)
Remove electrical power if no longer required.
(c)
Remove equipment cooling if no longer required.

INERTIAL NAVIGATION SYSTEM - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
______________________________________________________
1. General (Fig. 1)
_______
A. The inertial navigation system (INS) automatically determines the navigation and attitude data of the airplane to keep the airplane on a predetermined course. Barometric altitude, true airspeed, DME range and VOR omnibearing are inputs to the INS from onboard navigational equipment. The navigation data is displayed on flight instruments, allowing the flight crew to fly the airplane to the INS reference. The data is also supplied to the autopilot systems (Chapter 22), allowing the airplane to be automatically flown along the computed course.
