The other method is to set the MSU mode switch to NAV after inserting present position. When NAV is selected, the alignment sequence occurs just as it does when ALIGN is selected. However, when the alignment sequence is complete the INS goes into the NAV mode automatically; the MSU READY NAV annunciator does not come on. It can be determined whether or not the INS is in the navigate mode by pressing the CDU STS pushbutton and observing the status number displayed. When the status number is 1 the INS is in the navigate mode; display of any other number indicates that alignment is not complete. On airplanes with LTN-92 INS, one method is to set the MSU mode switch to ALIGN after inserting present position. When ALIGN is selected, the MSU ALIGN annunciator comes on. When the alignment sequence is completed, the INS is then ready to be switched to the navigate mode. When the MSU mode switch is set to NAV, the INS goes into the navigate mode. The other method is to set the MSU mode switch to NAV after inserting present position. When NAV is selected, the alignment sequence occurs just as it does when ALIGN is selected. However, when the alignment sequence is completed, the INS goes into the navigate mode automatically and the ALIGN annunciator goes out. It can also be determined if the INS is in the navigate mode by pressing the CDU STS pushbutton and observing the status number displayed. When the status number is 1, the INS is in the navigate mode; display of any other number indicates that alignment is not complete.
C. The INS incorporates a bulk storage memory containing a set of prestored routes, each route consists of an origin and a destination as well as a list of waypoints between the origin and destination. In addition, blank waypoints are also available for use. When the INS does not include a prestored route to be flown, a blank route may be selected by defining waypoints along that route.
D. The information that comprises the navigation data base is stored in solid state memory located in the INUs. The data is organized in the following five catalogs which are accessed via the CDU:
(1)
Custom - This catalog is intended to be used to store navigation data for repeated (day after day) use and yet still be alterable by the operator. The data consists of waypoints, stations, and airports, and resides in the INUs.
(2)
Crew - This catalog is provided to enable the crew to store waypoints for temporary use that are not in the Standard or Custom catalogs. The waypoints, stations, and airports in this catalog are stored in volatile memory in the INUs.
(3)
Routes - This catalog contains a collection of custom routes. It is capable of displaying the waypoint identifiers for any stored route and the latitude and longitude of each waypoint in the route. The data resides in the INUs and is alterable.
