DETECTION OF HANDLING VALVE MALFUNCTION
Applicable to: MSN
4566,,,
• Should any evidence supporting the probability of malfunction of one or more handling bleed
valve(s) be observed by the flight crew, a log book entry should be performed and a maintenance
determination (and corrective action, as required) be conducted upon return to the main base or at
the next out station capable of conducting such a maintenance determination/action.
Handling bleed valve(s) malfunction may be evidenced on ground or in flight by :
‐ Starting difficulties :
• Hung start,
• Sub-idle stall/roll back,
• Start EGT exceedance.
‐ Takeoff EGT being unexpectedly high (considering typical engine-to-engine variation and typical
engine EGT margin),
‐ Fuel flow shift in the order +3 % in typical cruise conditions and/or +6 % in typical
climb/alternate/diversion conditions (cross-wing comparison).
‐ Climb/Cruise EGT shift in the order of +20 °C to +50 °C, depending on flight phase (cross-wing
comparison).
Note: EGT increase due to engine deterioration is associated with N2 decrease. EGT
increase due to handling bleed malfunction is associated with N2 increase.
‐ Engine stall (surge) upon engine transient (acceleration or deceleration), in this particular case a
maintenance action is due prior to the next flight.
• In case of starting difficulties (hung start or start stall) being experienced during ground or air start,
proceed with a second or third start attempt in manual start.
Proceeding with successive start attempts has proven to be effective in achieving a successful
ground or air start.
• In case of detected Fuel Flow shift, and should one or more flight leg(s) be flown under this
condition, consider adding extra fuel accordingly.
ON GROUND - NON ENG SHUTDOWN AFTER SETTING ENG MASTER SW TO OFF
Applicable to: ALL
The normal procedure to shut down an engine is to set the engine master sw to OFF. In the case
where the engine does not shut down as expected, use the following procedure:
ECAM FUEL PAGE....................................................................................................................PRESS
LP FUEL VALVE POSITION (affected)..................................................................................... CHECK

 If LP fuel valve is closed – cross line in amber
No crew action. The engine will shut down after a time delay.
 If LP fuel valve is not closed
ENG FIRE pb (affected).......................................................................................................PRESS
Using the engine fire pushbutton will force the LP fuel valve to close. The engine will shut down
after a time delay.
TIME DELAY
The affected engine will shut down when all the fuel between the LP fuel valve and the engine
nozzles is burned by the engine. The shutdown of the engine can take up to 2 min and 30 s ,
depending on airport altitude and fuel recirculation system operation.
Keep ground staff informed.
