DISASSEMBLY
NOTE: Refer to the TESTING AND FAULT ISOLATION - PART 1 or PART 2 section to
find the condition of the unit or most possible cause of its malfunction.
This is to make sure that you will not disassemble the unit more than
necessary.
1. General
A. This section gives instructions to remove the primary assemblies
contained in the Video Modulator Unit (VMU) for maintenance.
B. Do the disassembly work in a fully de-energized condition with the test
harness removed from the J1 connector of the VMU.
C. Electrostatic discharges from your hands or tools can cause permanent
damage to most of the semiconductor devices on the printed circuit card
assemblies. Obey the general precautions given below to prevent such
damage:
· Do the disassembly and assembly work on a grounded conductive surface.
· Put on a conductive wrist-strap that is grounded.
· Touch your tool to the ground (grounded metal structure, etc.) before
you use it.
· Use a tip-grounded soldering iron.
· Put the removed printed circuit card assemblies on a grounded
conductive surface.
D. We give the IPC figure-item numbers in square brackets [ ] after the
assembly or part names. We do not give alpha-variant item numbers if
they are not shown on the IPC figures.
E. The primary assemblies in the VMU are as follows:
DESIGNATION FULL NAME QUANTITY
A1 card CPU card assembly 1
A2 card Modulator card assembly 12
A3 card RF power card assembly 1
A4 card Power card assembly 1
A5 card Mother card assembly 1
A6 card Fuse card assembly 1
A7 card Connector card assembly 1
A8 card Video signal generator card assembly 1
For the printed circuit card assemblies, we use their designations only
(A1 card, A2 card, etc.) as their names.

3. Disassembly Procedures
A. Disassembly for Fault Isolation
(1) Set the tester's POWER switch to OFF and disconnect the test harness
from the J1 connector of the UUT.
(2) Remove the 8 black screws [1-15] and remove the top cover assembly
[1-10].
(3) Remove the 4 black screws [1-40] and remove the bottom cover [1-35].
(4) This is all the disassembly that is necessary for fault isolation.
The rear side of the A5 card gives access to the A5 card connectors.
B. Removal of A1, A2, A3, and A4 Cards
You can easily remove these cards. To remove one of these cards, use the
