IFE Inflight Entertainment, same as passenger audio/video
entertainment.
IPC Illustrated Parts Catalog 23-32-47.
IPL Illustrated Parts List. (This section is removed. Refer to
IPC for parts data. Read "IPC" for "IPL" in the text of this
manual.)
IVASEB Integrated Video/Audio Seat Electronics Box, a component of
System 2000E.
NTSC National Television System Committee, the name for a color
television system of 525 lines per frame. 30 frames per
second, odd-line interlacing with two fields per frame. The
NTSC system is standard in the United States, Canada, Japan,
etc.
OMM Operation and Maintenance Manual.
PAL Phase Alternation by Line, the name for a color television
system of 625 lines per frame, 25 frames per second, odd-line
interlacing with two fields per frame. The PAL system is one
of the primary color television systems in Europe.
PC Personal Computer. It refers to the personal computer in
general and its associated technology.
PCU Passenger Control Unit.
PESC Passenger Entertainment System Controller, a component of
System 2000. (EPESC is the equivalent unit in System 2000E).
PLL Phase Locked Loop.
RF Radio Frequency. It has the same meaning as RF video in this
manual.
RF Video A mixture of RF carriers. Each RF carrier has a different
frequency and is amplitude-modulated with a video signal.
RS-232C Refers to EIA Recommended Standard RS-232C, used as adjective
to identify the type of serial communication ports, whose
electrical characteristics conform to those set forth in this
standard.
SDU Seat Display Unit.
SI Système International (d'Unités) in French, International
System of Units in English.
System 2000 General name for Matsushita integrated system design that
encompasses the passenger audio/video entertainment, passenger
service, and other systems.

VASEB Video Audio Seat Electronics Box, a component of System 2000.

VCP Video Cassette Player.
VMU Video Modulator Unit.
VSCU Enhanced Video System Control Unit, a component of System
2000. (EVSCU is the equivalent unit in System 2000E).

DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
1. General
A. The Video Modulator Units shown on the title page are manufactured by
Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. of Osaka, Japan. Sales and
support are provided by Panasonic Avionics Corporation, Bothell,
Washington 98021, U.S.A.
All part numbers are identical, except for the following:

RD-AA5002-12 139.25 to 295.25 MHz 50 W balanced for channels 1 to 12.
RD-AA5002-22 90.25 to 345.25 MHz 50 W balanced for channels 1 to 12.
RD-AA5002-23 90.25 to 345.25 MHz 50 W balanced for channels 1 to 11,
100 W balanced for channel 12.
RD-AA5002-25 90.25 to 345.25 MHz 50 W balanced for channels 1 to 6,
100 W balanced for channels 7 to 12.
Therefore, unless otherwise indicated, the term "video modulator unit" or
"VMU" refers to all part numbers.
B. Figure 1 shows the external views of the video modulator unit.
C. The video modulator unit is a component of the IFE system such as System
2000 or System 2000E. Figure 2 shows a diagram of an example system
(System 2000) that uses the VMU. There is no significant difference
between System 2000 and System 2000E for the VMU-related part of the
system.
D. Figure 3 shows a functional block diagram of the video modulator unit.
