where it made it all the way to Mars on
the ill-fated Mars Lander ‘Beagle 2’
programme; the mission came to an
impromptu end during the mission-critical
Martian landing stage, with
communication and/or software issues
being reported as the probable cause.
The low moisture absorption, low
electrical permittivity and dimensional
stability characteristics offered by LTM123
have also seen this product extensively
used for radomes and radar absorbing
structures, and also for high service
temperature structural applications in the
motorsport market.
Ericsson Racing Team – Progress Update
Everyone at ACG continues to follow the
Volvo Ocean Race with sustained interest.
As ‘Official Materials Supplier’ to Ericsson
Racing Team, ACG is appropriately proud
of the achievements of the two boats;
Ericsson 4 is the present race leader after 4
legs and, even after the dramas of leg 3,
Ericsson 3 still holds on to 5th place
overall.
Ericsson Racing Team’s yachts were both
built using ACG’S race proven VTM®264
long out life, intermediate viscosity, epoxy
resin matrix prepregs and associated
VTA®260 film adhesive, the latter being
used to bond the honeycomb and foam
cores.
At the time of writing, Ericsson 4
is currently engaged in a one-onone
battle at the head of the fleet
on Leg 5, which will take the fleet
deep into the testing Southern
Oceans where they will face one
of the ultimate tests in yacht
racing, the rounding of Cape Horn
on the way to the leg finish line in
Rio de Janeiro
The boats have already faced an
unexpectedly severe testing on leg 4.
Indeed, Ericsson 3 sustained damage and
had to suspend racing on route so that the
shore crew could repair the craft before
continuing to the finish in Qingdao China.
It proved to be little more than a ‘pit stop’,
with the fleet already lining up for leg 5 so
the ‘E3 boys’ simply turned the boat round,
loaded up and set off in hot pursuit. But
even after the delayed start, the crew have
sailed themselves back in contention on
the leg.
Just to recap on the previous legs: Ericsson
4 took 1st place on legs 1 and 2, 4th on leg
3 and 3rd on leg 4, while Ericsson 3 took
4th place on leg 1, 3rd place on leg 2, 3rd
in leg 3 and 5th in leg 4. A full race roundup

It’s difficult to imagine the conditions that
the crews of these ocean-going yachts
have to endure, but reports suggest that
mere mortals would struggle to cope in
such severe conditions. All yachts have
taken, and will continue to take, a
tremendous pounding, but – with luck,
skillful sailing, expert builders and hardy
materials, Ericsson 3 and 4 will survive the
course, conquer the elements and come
home victorious after this 10 leg
marathon.

New OOA Compatible Dual Cure Adhesive
ACG is pleased to announce the recent
addition of HTA®240 to its Out-Of-
Autoclave (OOA) processing range.
Specifically developed to complement its
Airbus qualified MTM®44-1 matrix system,
ACG’s HTA240 dual-cure 130°C/180°C
(266°F/356°F) structural film adhesive is
fully cure-compatible with MTM44-1,
forming full bond strength under vacuum
bag cure and capable of withstanding
subsequent additional secondary cures up
to 180°C (356°F).
HTA240, which will bond aluminium and
composite substrates, either to themselves
or to honeycomb core materials, offers a
superior combination of honeycomb peel
strength and high service temperature
capability.
