Pemco in Cargo Conversions Pact
Pemco Aviation (Booth 1016) earlier this year signed a deal for a new cargo conversion
partnership in China with Taikoo (Xiamen) Aircraft Engineering Company
(TAECO), and Taikoo (Shandong) Aircraft Engineering Company (STAECO). The
firms will jointly market in the Asia Pacific region and perform the conversion work
at TAECO-STAECO’s facilities in China. They’re to start with the Boeing 737.
MTU Touts Its Worldwide Reach
MTU Maintenance is promoting itself as the world’s largest independent commercial
engine services provider at Booth 6712, noting a global reach and its role as a risksharing
partner in many of the programs it supports. The MTU Maintenance group
has subsidiaries in Hannover and Berlin-Brandenburg, Germany; Vancouver; Zhuhai,
China; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; and Brazil. Repair and overhaul of medium and
large-scale civil engines, including the GE CF6-50 and CF6-80C2, Pratt & Whitney
PW2000, IAE V2500 and CFM International’s CFM56-7 is carried out at the company’s
Hannover facility in Germany.
Hamilton Sundstrand for Qantas
Hamilton Sundstrand (Booth 609) said in Australia last month that it’s signed a
10-year, on-site support agreement with Qantas Airways covering electric power system
products on the Qantas fleet of 122 large commercial
aircraft. Hamilton Sundstrand will assign a dedicated advisor
to Qantas in Sydney. Hamilton Sundstrand has a separate
new 10-year pact to continue to provide maintenance
support for electric, air management and emergency power
systems on Bombardier regional jets operated by PSA Airlines; and will offer total
repair and inventory support services to V2500 operators as part of its Comprehensive
Accessory Repair and Exchange (CARE) program.
Treading on Triumph on the A380F
Triumph Group’s Airborne Structures and Accessory Services units are promoting
new capabilities for New Generation 737s, among them support of flight control
surfaces and CFM56-7 nacelle and thrust reversers (Structures), and ACM, IDG and
APU starter generator (Accessory Services). Triumph Composite Systems (Spokane)
will design and manufacture floorboards for the A380 Freighter. Airbus reported
cutting the first A380F metal last week. Triumph is at Booth 1808.
ACTS Acts for Delta’s Boeing Fleet
Air Canada Technical Services says its contract to provide heavy maintenance for
Delta’s fleet of more than 200 Boeing 757-200, 767-300 and 767-300ER aircraft,
beginning next month, will create some 300 jobs at the ACTS center in Vancouver
and will be worth some $300 million over five years. ACTS is at Booth 410.
‘We Need to Be Flexible’ in MRO–
But Consistency Is Necessary Too
“We need to be flexible because every airline
and every operator has a different way of
running their business,” says Jim Patrick,
director of Hamilton Sundstrand’s CARE
program—Comprehensive Accessory Repair
and Exchange.
“Almost every customer has a slightly different
need,” Patrick says, which is why
“canned” solutions can’t work.
But while customers
need to see flexibility, and
reconciliation, for example,
between scheduled
and on-condition maintenance
demands to fit
their own operations scopes, providers need
predictability.
“We’ve got to drive as much consistency
as we can to achieve economies of scale,”
Patrick says. One way to do that while still
giving customers what they want is to pool
inventories between various customer programs,
as was recently done for CRJ700
programs at Hamilton Sundstrand.
“There’s not one answer,” Patrick says.
“It’s not a one-size-fits-all type of business.”
Operators, he adds, need all the help they
can get. “The airline industry is suffering and
we’re all trying to find ways to help.”
Hamilton Sundstrand notched parts, repair
and technical support revenues of more than
$1 billion last year. The business employs
approximately 1,500 people serving 900 customers
at four shops in Asia, four in Europe
and three in the U.S.
