components and structures. This brings
mutual benefits to ACM and its clients,
as spreads wider acceptance of
composites across a broader audience,
while also delivering important, costeffective
manufacturing techniques
that are beneficial to industry in
general.
In terms of scale, ACE develops general
tooling to 10 metres long, but the
biggest ever produced measured an
impressive 24.5 metres long (over 80
feet – slightly longer than a tennis
court). ACE has developed wing spar,
fuselage, cockpit, and component
tooling for prestigious global aircraft
manufacturers, introducing customised
tooling concepts to facilitate the
manufacturing process.
ACE also offers the Group’s customers
the ability to develop ideas in its
facilities. This can be anything from
one-off trial component manufacturing
to developing a completely new
process. ACE’s flexible ‘job shop’
approach and capability lends itself to
this type of support. In terms of what is
on the shop floor, every week brings
new challenges, and the experienced
workforce thrives on the challenges,
rising to the occasion, and delivering its
best at every turn.
Looking forward, ACE is well positioned
to develop its supportive role, providing
the Group and its customers with
further measured success.
ACG’s 2008 Global Suppliers’ Conference
ACG’s 2008 Global Suppliers’ Conference
was hailed yet another successful event,
with over 80 attendees from the far
corners of the composites world, and
many new suppliers as a consequence of
ACG’s expansion into phenolic resins.
Having listened attentively to ACG’s plans
and strategies to embrace ‘Project 2012’,
the audience enjoyed presentations on
supply chain management by David
Phipps (Airbus UK) and Michael Carr (East
Midlands Development Agency [EMDA]).
David Smith, ACG Group Purchasing
Manager, used the occasion to launch the
ACG Supplier Handbook, which goes handin-
hand with the Group’s recent ISO/TS
16949 qualification.
David set the gathering an interesting task
for the 2009 conference - to guess the
Euro/Sterling and US dollar/Sterling
exchange rates and the Brent Crude Oil
price for November 2009; all answers are
now locked away until the next
conference date!
As is customary at the Global Suppliers’
Conference, ACG’s 2008 supplier awards
were presented. The recipient of the ACG
UK Supplier of the Year went to Toray
International UK Ltd, the ACG Inc. Supplier
of the Year went to ABF Freight Systems
Inc., and the ACG Group Supplier of the
Year went to Solvay Advanced Polymers.

Page 8 DECISION S.A. - The Construction and Realisation of Structures
Established in 1983, DECISION S.A. is a
major force in the marine industry, building
many of the innovative and exciting
designs that sail or cruise the waters today.
Capitalising on their leading edge
developments in composite construction,
this knowledge is now applied in other
sectors, including aerospace, construction
and sports equipment.
DECISION has always had vision of the
future and, today, it is actively engaged at
the very heart of composite technologies,
utilising prepreg materials manufactured
by ACG to realise its objectives. While
knowledge of composite materials is the
keystone of DECISION's know-how, its
success is evenly attributed to its
exceptional ability to analyse and resolve
problems as it is to its rigorous
management of prototype development
and rapid manufacturing capability.
DECISION has a long-standing and
collectively beneficial relationship with
ACG, with both companies having similar
business philosophies and steadfast views
on the future. ACG’s approach to the
design, development and formulation of
resin systems for demanding applications
has seen the Group forge an enviable
reputation for providing innovative
solutions for applications in all market
sectors. Strong personal links have been
forged with DECISION’s director, Bertrand
Cardis, engineer and designer, Jean-Marie
Fragnière, and workshop chief, Claude-
Alain Jacot. Personnel from ACG’s Applied
Technologies Team have spent long periods
on-site during critical build and processing
stages, providing dedicated front-line
support as required.
DECISION is presently moving to larger
