custom-built facilities (pictured) at
Ecublens, near Lausanne, Switzerland,
where it will benefit from the essential
testing services provided by the nearby
Ecole Polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne,
an institution with which DECISION already
has a long-standing partnership. The new
site includes a larger workshop and two
ovens, one which can be
adapted to suit particular
components, while the other
will readily accommodate a 90ft
(27.5m) yacht, and will be used
to cure boats, such as one on
the scale of America’s Cup. The
latter will also be used to cure
structures for a yet-to-be unveiled airplane
that has been designed to take-off and fly
autonomously around the world, day and
night, propelled uniquely by solar energy.
DECISION has developed an enviable
reputation for building racing craft such as
the Décision 35 (pictured), a fleet of multihulls,
and many motor-driven yachts,
including the Runabout ‘Trident’, and even
rescue vessels. A particularly innovative
project was the solar powered lake ferry
‘Mouette Genevoise’, a small fleet of which
now operates on Lake Geneva.
The DECISION boatyard is proud to have
played its part as the constructor in two
America’s Cup victories. The first success
came in the 2003 - 31st Cup Challenge,
with a repeat for the same competitor in
the 32nd in 2007. Surprisingly, the 2003
success was the first European team
victory in the event’s 150-year history.
Projects of the magnitude encountered at
DECISION preclude the use of high pressure
autoclaves, so vacuum-bag processing is
generally the only feasible option. ACG’s
Lloyds’ Register approved VTM®260 series
of epoxy resin matrices, a new generation
of long out life, flexible cure temperature
formulations, which can be formatted on a
wide range of reinforcements and adapted
to a wide range of low cost, vacuum-bag
pressure moulding processes, have been
used extensively by Decision throughout
their long-standing relationship with ACG.
VTM®260 series formulations are
specifically tailored to give optimal
handling and processing characteristics
with reinforcements ranging from
lightweight veils to heavyweight multiaxial
fabrics, and unidirectional (UD) tapes
up to 600gsm, as well as ACG’s ZPREG®
partial impregnation, rapid lay-up
technology. The VTM®260 series offers
outstanding vacuum-only processing
capability – low temperature (65-80°C
[149-176°F]) and medium temperature (80
to 130°C [176 to 266°F]), and up to 30 days
out life. The series is supported by a range
of complimentary VTA® adhesives, VTS
epoxy syntactic films, and VTF surfacing
materials.
As the technology developed, DECISION
recognised the limitations of the tooling
techniques common to the marine industry
and adopted prepreg construction to
improve the stability and accuracy of their
tooling. Initially, a classic prepreg was used,
but - in collaboration with ACG - specific
prepreg formats and lay-up strategies were
developed to deliver the required stability
and reduce labour costs. The result was the
amalgamation of surface plies derived
from ACG’s automotive body panel
systems and ZPREG® rapid lay-up
technology, and provided a product that
allows tooling as long as 30m to be
laminated and cured within 3 to 4 days.
DECISION moves to its new facility taking
with it a reputation for ingenuity and
quality. ACG, which is proud to be
associated with the company, wishes all
who work for DECISION every success in
the future.
