chassis (safety shell) for Formula One
race cars, a design that was embraced
by all teams at that time, and one that
set the standard that is still used to this
day.
Building on initial accomplishments, of
which there were many, the Group went
on to develop and manufacture its own
range of materials under the name
‘Advanced Composite Materials’ (ACM),
a division which is now the mainstay of
the Group’s business.
Today, ACM, which has a parallel
division (Advanced Composites Group
Inc) in Tulsa, USA, is underpinned by the
Group’s state-of-the-art Technology
Centre and a desire to push the
boundaries of tooling and prepreg
technology ever further and present the
advantages of composites to a wider
audience to grasp and exploit for the
greater benefit of engineering.
ACE, which operates from three of the
Group’s six manufacturing sites in
Heanor, UK, contributes in many ways
to ACG’s current success, and is seen as
a shop window for the Group’s
products, applying them for the benefit
of customers who don’t have their own
manufacturing facilities. Backed by a
dedicated team of design engineers,
managers and tooling experts, ACE
provides a one-stop shop option where
a customer’s project is taken from
inception through to productionisation
and, where required, small scale
manufacture, regardless of size or
complexity.
All ACE asks of a customer is for it to
recognise the potential benefits that
advanced composites might have for its
business venture. With support from
other divisions, ACE, for its part, will do
its utmost to see that expectations are
fulfilled, and actively promote the use of
composites across all industries.
ACE, which is actively involved in the
application of ACM’s materials, is a
proving ground for future technologies
and provides direct feedback to the
Group’s prepreg production facility to
fine tune products offered to the
markets that it serves. This, which is
part of the Group’s product
development philosophy, ensures that
its customers receive products that are
fit for purpose. ACE stands proud in the
knowledge that it adds significant value
to the Group.
Building on considerable experience
across all market sectors, with a 'handson’
approach, ACE continues to
manufacture tools and
components for its customers,
and has found unparalleled
success in the aerospace
industry. Wing spar and
fuselage tools are used across
this industry with considerable
success, many of them going
on to use ACM’s prepregs for
component manufacture.
On-going, multi-partner,
collaborative development
programmes are supported at
ACE under the supervision of the
Group’s Technology Centre, and its
tooling technology and design facilities.
Emphasis is placed on making best use
of the Group’s patented LTM®, MTM®,
HTM® and VTM® prepreg technologies,
but particularly on its tooling prepregs,
which receive glowing endorsements
from the marine, aerospace, automotive
and motor sport industries.
ACE is particularly adept at assisting in
the development and deployment of
advanced composites into emerging
markets, and establishing applications
for both new and existing prepregs.
ACE has been instrumental in the
development of the Group’s most recent
prepreg technology ‘DForm™’, a groundbreaking
prepreg developed for tooling
and component production. DForm is a
labour and cost-saving prepreg
technology that combines the
conformability of a short fibre moulding
compound with the directional
characteristics of a high performance,
long fibre composite. Like any product,
DForm experienced the usual multistage
development cycle, with material
application testing being carried out at
ACE before being submitted to
customers for production trials.
Another excellent example of ACE’s
ability is the development of composite
tooling for the aerospace industry.
Because of client confidentiality
agreements, ACE cannot disclose
specific programmes, but, briefly, the
division works harmoniously with
major aircraft consortiums, helping
them capitalise on innovative materials
technology and develop new ways of
exploiting these for the manufacture of
lightweight, high-strength, costeffective
composite aircraft
