Examine the main gearbox for these conditions: discoloration, distortion, and burned areas.

If you find any signs of those conditions, remove and repair the engine.

(a)
Open the No. 4 bearing compartment (AMM 72-54-05/401).
(b)
Examine the packing for deterioration.
1) Examine the bearing cover for coke.
(c)
Examine the bearing compartment for coke.
1) Remove the engine if you find coke in the bearing cover or compartment (AMM 71-00-02/401).
NOTE: The carbon seal or oil nozzle of the No. 4
____ bearing is possibly damaged.
2) If you do not find coke, close the No. 4 bearing compartment (AMM 72-54-05/401).

Examine the angle gearbox for coke (Fig. 605).
(a)
Remove the fan exit lining that is at the 6 o'clock position (AMM 72-34-03/401).
(b)
Remove the angle gearbox plug (AMM 72-62-01/401) and examine the packing for deterioration. 1) Examine the gears in the angle gearbox for coke.

2) If you find coke, remove the engine (AMM 71-00-02/401).
NOTE:____ The carbon seals or the oil nozzles of the
No. 1, 1.5 and 2 bearing compartment are possibly
damaged.
3) If you do not find coke, install the angle gearbox plug
(AMM 72-62-01/401).
a) Install the fan exit lining segment at the 6 o'clock
position (AMM 72-34-03/401).

Examine the No. 3 bearing breather tube assemblies for coke (Fig. 606).
(a)
Remove the upper breather tube. 1) Remove the lockwire and loosen the lower tube nut and the internal tube nut of the diffuser case. 2) Remove the clamp bolts and nuts that attach the tube to the
brackets. 3) Remove the tube.
(b)
Remove the lower breather tube. 1) Remove three bolts that attach the tube to the main gearbox.
2) ENGINES PRE-PW-SB 72-211; Remove the clamp bolt that attaches the tube to the bracket which is installed at the rear mount of the oil cooler.
3) ENGINES POST-PW-SB 72-211; Remove the clamp bolt that attaches the tube to the bracket which is installed at the HPC secondary flow control valve.
4) Remove the tube and discard the packing.
(c) Examine the upper and lower breather tube and the inner surface of the internal tube of the diffuser case for coke. 1) Remove the engine if you find coke (AMM 71-00-02/401)
NOTE: The carbon seals or oil nozzle of the No. 3 bearing
____ are possibly damaged.
