 3.  LPC/LPT Coupling (Fig. 2)

 A.  The low pressure compressor (LPC) rotor is driven by the low pressure turbine (LPT). The LPC/LPT coupling consists of those interface parts that attach and secure the front LPC hub of the LPC rotor to the low pressure turbine (LPT) shaft.
 B.  The main feature of the LPC/LPT coupling is a titanium turbine shaft coupling which is splined to the front LPC hub at the forward end and is splined to the LPT shaft at the rear. A steel retaining nut secures the front LPC hub to the turbine shaft coupling while a titanium retaining nut secures the coupling to the LPT shaft.
 C.  The turbine shaft coupling is supported structurally through the No. 1.5 roller bearing to the intermediate case. Mounted on the turbine shaft coupling is a steel motional pickup wheel from which the low rotor speed (N1) is determined.
 4.  Fan Case (Fig. 3)

 A.  The fan case assembly consists of three separate fan cases: the front fan case, the fan exit case and vane assembly(including the 2.5 bleed valve and linkage), and the fan exit rear case. The purpose of the fan cases is to contain and direct the fan discharge airstream and to provide the structural link between the airframe and the core engine. The fan exit rear case is integral to the intermediate case and is described in the intermediate case section.
 B.  The strengthened stainless steel front fan case supports the inlet cowl and provides for containment of the 1st-stage (fan) blades. Abradable fan blade rubstrip segments, which are made by an injection molding process that requires no finish machining, are secured to the inner diameter of the fan case with adhesive and mechanical retention. The fan case is supported by mechanical attachment to the outer fan exit case and vane.
 C.  The fan exit case and vane consists of an inner and outer aluminum case assembly and 84 fan exit vanes that span the two cases. At the forward end the outer case supports the front fan case, while at the rear the outer case itself is supported by mechanical attachment to the fan exit rear case. The inner case supports the LPC stator at the forward end, while itself being supported at the rear by mechanical attachment to the intermediate case. The fan exit vanes, which are constructed of composite material, are designed to straighten the fan discharge airstream prior to the air entering the thrust reverser flow path.
