 5. 1st-Stage Fan Blade Platform Inspection for Damage (Fig. 606)

 A. General
 (1)  
This inspection is done when you think there is foreign object damage (FOD).

 B.
Equipment

 (1)  
Protective mat - Rubber Manufacturer's
 Association, Grade SC43, neoprene sponge, 1
 inch thick, approximately 5x6 feet with warning
 streamers attached (3 are necessary).


 C.

Location Zone
 412 Engine 1 - LPC Hub
 422 Engine 2 - LPC Hub
 432 Engine 3 - LPC Hub
 442 Engine 4 - LPC Hub

Procedure

 CAUTION:_______MAKE SURE YOU USE A PROTECTIVE MAT. IF YOU DO NOT, DAMAGE MAY RESULT TO THE INNER SURFACE OF THE INLET COWL.
 (1)  Put the protective mat on the inner surface of the inlet cowl.

 WARNING: TO PREVENT INJURY TO YOUR HANDS, GLOVES SHOULD BE WORN WHEN YOU

 HANDLE THE BLADES.

 (2)  
Examine the platform surfaces for nicks, dents, and scratches (Fig. 606, and Table 602).

 (a)  
Use 10X magnification.

 (b)  
Repair the blades that have damage (AMM 72-31-02/801).

Examine the platform for cracks.

Remove fan blades that have cracks in the platform, because cracks are not permitted in the platform and you cannot repair cracks.
