Fan Blade Lock-up

 1)  Lock-up is the sticking of the contact faces of the mid-span shrouds when the friction is high enough to prevent sliding. The mid-span shroud contact faces are designed to slide as the blades twist slightly during normal operation. High friction between the mid-span contact faces can be caused by such conditions as excessive hardface surface roughness/chipping or lack of lubrication.

2) Symptoms of fan blade lock-up are as follows: a) A higher than normal N1 engine vibration can be observed.
 b)  Tightness of the fan blades (observed by the absence of blade looseness at the 12:00 o'clock position during rotor rotation) can be the cause. Some fan rotors can seem to be locked when there is no looseness at the
12:00 o'clock position, but unless a resonating sound can be produced, the rotor is not locked.
 c)  A locked fan rotor is always associated with hearing a resonating sound when a single fan blade is struck with a finger. If a fan rotor is not locked, there will be a dull thud.
 3)  Fan Blade Shingling
 a)  Fan blades shingle when the mid-span shrouds overlap. Shingling results when the fan blades have been forced to flex in such a manner that causes adjacent blades to bend in a circumferential direction. At the maximum amount of blade bending, the shroud of one blade overlaps the shroud of the mating blade. When the blades return to their neutral position the shrouds are shingled. Usually this happens to blades in the area of contact with an ingested soft-bodied object.
