A. Removal of Paint by Abrasion - Metallic and Composite Materials
WARNING : USE SOLVENTS/CLEANING AGENTS, SEALANTS AND OTHER SPECIAL
_______ MATERIALS ONLY WITH A GOOD SUPPLY OF AIR. OBEY THE MANUFACTURERS INSTRUCTIONS. PUT ON PROTECTIVE CLOTHING. DO NOT GET THEM IN YOUR MOUTH. DO NOT SMOKE. DO NOT BREATHE THE GAS. THESE MATERIALS ARE POISONOUS, FLAMMABLE AND SKIN IRRITANT. GET MEDICAL HELP IF YOUR SKIN OR EYES BECOME IRRITATED.
CAUTION : DO NOT CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE SURFACE OF THE COMPOSITE MATERIAL
_______ WHEN YOU REMOVE THE PAINT COATING WITH ABRASIVE PAPER.
R CAUTION : DO NOT USE A METAL SCRAPER TO REMOVE THE UNWANTED MATERIAL. A
_______ R METAL SCRAPER CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE SURFACE OF THE COMPONENT.
NOTE : This procedure gives the data necessary to remove the paint
____ coatings from composite materials. The procedure can also be used to remove paint coatings from metallic materials, as an alternative procedure to chemical paint stripping.
NOTE : This procedure gives the data necessary to remove the top coat of
____ the paint system, but not to remove the basic primer.
(1) Lightly abrade the surface of the work area with the abrasive paper, grade 220 or 320, until the layer of basic primer comes fully into view.
R (2) Polish the abraded areas with the scotch-brite pad, MISCELLANEOUS
(Material No. 19-011).
(3) Remove and discard the masking materials.
R (4) Clean the work area with a lint-free cloth MISCELLANEOUS (Material R No. 19-003) and the CLEANING AGENTS (Material No. 11-004), and let R the surface dry.
(5)
Inspect the areas that were masked for damaged paint.
(6)
If necessary, do the steps (1), (2) and (4) again, to remove the damaged paint.
(7)
If applicable, inspect the work area for damage to the sealing beads of the skin joints.
(8)
If necessary, repair the damaged sealing beads at the skin joints (Ref. TASK 51-76-11-300-001).
5. Close-up

A. Put the aircraft back to the serviceable condition.
(1)
If necessary, remove the protection covers/devices you installed on the aircraft components adjacent to the work area (Ref. TASK 12-21-11-615-001).
(2)
Make sure that the work area is clean and clear of tool(s) and other items.
