R This topic gives data about the reasons for the use of sealants on the
R aircraft and the primary sealing areas.

R A. Use of Sealants
R (1) The primary uses for sealants on the aircraft are:
R - sealing the fuselage structure to make sure that the necessary
R internal pressure is kept during the flight,
R - sealing the fuel tanks (Ref. AMM 51-76-12 for the repair of fuel
R tank sealing),
R - sealing the external joints of the aircraft structure to make sure
R that water does not go into the structure and to make the structure
R smoother,
R - sealing riveted and bolted joints to make sure that liquids do not
R get into the joints,
R - sealing sandwich structures to make sure that moisture does not go
R into the structure,
R - to prevent corrosion (galvanic action) between different metals,
R - to prevent corrosion between different materials, especially
R between CFRP and aluminum alloys,
R - to prevent fretting corrosion (fatigue stress or vibration between
R parts of the structure can cause this),
R - to fill cavities,
R - to protect the surface on housings, channels, tubes, electrical
