A music clan?
I am a huge music fan and I would like to know
if there are any clans associated with music in
the city.

If you love the smell of airplane fuel, the blast of its engine
at full throttle, and taking pictures of planes, head to Jari
Mari at Kurla. Chances are that you’ll bump into a group of
planespotters and aviation photographers who do this day
in and day out, writes Kareena N Gianani
From the collectors’ album: (Clockwise from top left) The Air Sahara 737-400
which crash landed at Mumbai in 2005 being towed to a scrap dealer, the BAE-146
which brought the Duke & Duchess of Kent to India in the 60s, an Emirates Boeing
777-300 departing for Dubai at 5am, and the rock group Iron Maiden’s private Boeing
It’s the thrill of gaping at the underbelly of an airplane and
capturing it forever that brings (from left) Sean D’ Silva,
Pallav Desai, Jimmy Wadia and Yash Rajgor to Jari Mari at
Kurla, the mecca for planespotters in Mumbai — Mukesh Trivedi.DNA
The runway at Princess Juliana Airport is
directly behind Maho Beach (left), situated
in St Maarten in the Netherlands Antilles.
The top of the beach is separated from the
runway tarmac by a narrow road; in fact
the distance from the sand to the tarmac
runway is 20 feet and aircraft are passing
over the beach at an altitude of between 30
and 60 feet on their final approach; occasionally
even lower. The jet blast from
landing aircraft can knock you off your feet
and create artificial waves in Maho Bay.
Watching airplanes over the beach is such
a popular activity that daily arrivals and
departures airline timetables are displayed
on a board in most of bars and restaurants.
During World War II and the subsequent
Cold War some countries encouraged their
citizens to become “planespotters” in an
“observation corps” or similar public body
for reasons of public security. Britain had
the Royal Observer Corps which operated
between 1925 and 1995.
In 2002, 14 plane-spotters (Dutch and
Britons) were arrested at an airshow in
Kalamata, southern Greece, and charged
with taking pictures in a military zone. The
planespotters insisted they were at the
show on the invitation of the Greek authorities
and that any information collected was
already freely available. The group spent
five weeks in prison before posting bail
of £9,000 each. Later, eight were found
guilty of espionage and the rest of aiding
and abetting.

Where planespotters get a discount
Some planespotters have all the luck. Take, for instance, The Renaissance
London Heathrow Hotel near Heathrow airport. The hotel, that has an
incredible view of the airplanes going to and away from the airport,
offers airplane spotters special deals on the weekends where it discounts
the room and includes breakfast. Talk about getting awoken by an A380
landing right outside your window and getting unlimited access to the
concierge lounge overlooking the airport.
