Engineering
Ensuring the safety and reliability of commercial
aircraft begins long before passengers
walk onboard. It starts in the factory,
where companies such as Boeing, Airbus,
and Honeywell assemble and maintain airplanes
and avionics systems for airlines
around the globe. Gables Engineering—
founded in 1946 and now the world’s largest
provider of avionics control panels—is a
key player in this quality-assurance process.
With help from Adobe partner Caxton, Inc.,
Gables is using Adobe FrameMaker+SGML
software to create and help manage the vast
documentation library that is required to
meet evolving industry standards.
Gables Engineering is contractually required
by customers to provide manuals for all
phases of installing, maintaining, and repairing
avionics control panels. Aircraft manufacturers
refer to this material and pass
it along to the airlines to incorporate into
their own maintenance procedures. For
that reason, all Gables documentation must
comply with paper and digital format specifications
set by the Air Transport Association
(ATA), which represents major airlines, and
pass review by the U.S. Federal Aviation
Administration (FAA).

Gables continuously issues new manuals,
quarterly revisions, and interim service bulletins.
On average, manuals cover about
10,000 components, with each book tracking
about 350 part numbers over 300 pages
and 17 chapters.
“Our five-person tech pubs team was pushing
the limits of Microsoft Word to create
manuals,” says Ozzie Rodriguez, a technical
writer in Gables’ customer support department.
“The program was unable to handle
book-length files, so we had to break each
manual into as many as 70 small files, which
we had to edit one by one. It was very frustrating
and time-consuming.”
Moreover, Gables needed to start creating
structured documents in the Standard
Generalized Markup Language (SGML),
which makes it easy for customers to repackage
information. “The aircraft industry is
moving toward SGML,” says Rodriguez.
“Suppliers who can deliver it today have a
real sales advantage.”
Looking to overhaul its publication system,
Terry Parsons, manager of technical publications
at Gables, approached Caxton,
