GKNAES Technical Publications produced data modules for the Aircraft Maintenance
Manual, Structural Repair Manual and Aircraft Illustrated Parts Catalogue for the aft engine
nacelle, including systems and engine mounting structure. Component Maintenance
Manuals were produced for a number of repairable parts.
Throughout the programme and, subsequently, for the Service Bulletin and revision service,
GKNAES has managed the supply of data inputs from sub-tier supplier Barry Controls of
California, USA.
Project Case Study 2:
Customer: Lockheed Martin, Atlanta, Georgia
Project: C27J turboprop military transport
Task Description: Production of electronic data inputs to the airframe manuals for
the engine nacelle, integrated by the prime customer
Duration: Commenced in April 1998 and, following release of initial issue
manuals, continues with a full revision service
Specification: ATA 100 & ATA 2100
Formats: Text in SGML and MS-Word; illustrations in CGM
Delivery media: Electronic files via FTP link for AMM, SRM, AIPC and BDRM;
CMMs as electronic files via FTP link and on CD-ROM
Published media: C130J – printed bound manuals
C27J – CD-ROM (reader access was via a product such as
Split Vision Aero)

GKNAES secured the follow-on work for the engine nacelle for the C27J because of its
successful performance on the C130J project. This was in respect of design and
manufacture as well as the Technical Publications. GKNAES Technical Publications
produced data inputs for the C27J engine nacelle sections of the Aircraft Maintenance
Manual, Structural Repair Manual, Aircraft Illustrated Parts Catalogue and Battle Damage
Repair Manual for the C130J Hercules. Component Maintenance Manuals were also
produced for a number of repairable parts.

Customer: Rolls-Royce, Derby
Project: Trent 700 turbofan engine for the Airbus A330 series of
airliners
Task Description: Production of printed document sections and soft copy for the
fan cowl door structure
Duration: Commenced in March 1997 and continues with a full revision
and operator support service
Specification: ATA 100
Formats: Text in MS-Word; illustrations in TIFF
Delivery media: Printed pages or complete publications with soft copy, plus
some data files as E-mail attachments
Published media: Printed bound manuals
Quality Assurance: BS EN ISO 9001 and GKN procedure WOS-661-013
GKNAES Technical Publications inherited the Technical Publications task for the Trent 700
fan cowl door after the production had commenced. GKNAES undertook the reformatting of
the existing material to bring it fully into line with the customer’s requirements. Completely
new sections of the Aircraft Maintenance Manual, Structural Repair Manual and Aircraft
Illustrated Parts Catalogue were produced for modified variants of the fan cowl door.
A significant part of the revision and support service for these publications, involves the
production and incorporation into the Structural Repair Manual of Technical Variances,
supplied direct to airline operators.
Project Case Study 4:
Customer: Honeywell, Phoenix, Arizona
Project: Bombardier Continental BD100 turbofan airliner
Task Description: Production of electronic inputs to the airframe manuals for the
engine nacelle and thrust reverser system, integrated by the
aircraft manufacturer
Duration: Commenced in February 1999 with first issue manuals
released in June 2003. A full revision service will follow.
Specification: ATA i2200
Formats: Text in SGML; illustrations in CGM
Delivery media: Electronic files via FTP link for AMM, SRM, FIM, NDTM,
PPBM, SSM and AIPC, also CMMs
Published media: CD-ROM and/or DVD (low level IETP – reader access software

Catalogue for the engine nacelle, including the thrust reverser and other systems.
