Leading Edge Ballast
Removal and Installation
1. General
A. There are two tasks in this procedure. One is the removal of the leading edge Ballast. The second is the installation of the leading edge ballast.
B. There are two configurations for the ballast weight installation.
Caution: The ballast components weigh as much as 30 pounds. It is advised that two people be available for the removal and installation of the ballast components to prevent damage to the ballast and surrounding structure.
2. Ballast Removal
A. Access
(1) Location Zone
546 Adapter Plug – Left Wing
646 Adapter Plug – Right Wing
B. Procedure
(1)
Remove Leading Edge Skin. See figure 401.
(a)
Remove the bolts holding the leading edge skin.
Caution: Care should be taken when removing leading edge skin so as to prevent damage to the skin and fay surface sealant. The existing fay sealant has a release coat, thus permitting the leading edge skin to be removed cleanly. The fay sealant can be reused if no damaged is incurred.
(b)
Remove leading edge skin.

Remove lower panel. See figure 401.

Remove the bolts holding the lower panel.
Caution: Care should be taken when removing lower panel so as to prevent damage to the panel and fay surface sealant. The existing fay sealant has a release coat, thus permitting the lower panel to be removed cleanly. The fay sealant can be reused if no damaged is incurred.
(b)
Remove lower panel.

Remove Ballast See figure 402.
(a)
Remove the ballast installation hardware: 4 nuts, 4 aft washers, 2 upper bolts, 2 lower bolts, and 4 forward washers.
(b)
Remove the forward ballast.
(c)
Remove the aft ballast.
CAUTION: ONCE FASTENERS ARE LOOSE BALLAST WEIGHTS ARE UNSUPPORTED.
