H.  Disconnect the six wire bundles for the fin that are above the passenger cabin ceiling at Body Station 1705 (between stringers S2R and S2L). Disconnect the two wire bundles for the fin at Body Station 1650 (on stringers S2R and S2L). Remove all the clamps that hold the wires to the structure. Break the two pressure seals above the cabin ceiling at Body Station 1710 (between stringers S2R and S2L). Pull the wire bundles up into the area that is forward of the fin front spar. Find a safe location to coil and stow the ends of the wires.
NOTE:  IF THIS IS AN EMERGENCY OPERATION, YOU CAN CUT ALL HYDRAULIC LINES AND ELECTRICAL WIRES AT AN EASY LOCATION. USE A MECHANICAL (NO SPARK) TOOL TO CUT THE WIRES TO PREVENT A POSSIBLE FIRE.
I. Do Step 1 if you did not do it before.

REMOVAL OF THE VERTICAL FIN

J.  Remove the nuts from the 19 bolts (Hi-Lok bolts) on each side of the fin (see Figure 2-38). Go through door B-48-1 to get access to the bolts from the internal side of Section 48. Go through the hole (manhole) in the aft torque box of the fin to remove 15 of the bolts (not No. 1, 2, 18 and 19). Go through panel V70-4 for bolts No. 1 and 2 and panel V70-7 for bolts No. 18 and 19 (Figure 2-40). It is best if you remove three bolts (No. 6, 9 and 12) after you remove all the other bolts. These three bolts are the equivalent of shear pins in the removal procedure.
CAUTION:  MAKE SURE THAT THE HOIST CABLE IS TIGHT BEFORE YOU REMOVE THE TENSION BOLTS. ALSO MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE A PERSON AT EACH LINE (GUY LINE). THE FIN CAN MOVE SUDDENLY WHEN YOU REMOVE THE LAST BOLTS.
K.  Remove the 16 tension bolts between Body Stations 1720 and 1787 at WL 293. There are eight bolts on the left side of the fin and eight bolts on the right side. The bolts come out of the fuselage structure and they connect with barrel nuts in the fin structure. See Figure 2-45 for a usual installation. You remove the bolts from the internal side of Section 48.
CAUTION:  MAKE SURE THAT ALL PERSONS GET OUT OF THE AIRPLANE. THE FIN CAN MOVE SUDDENLY (WEATHERVANE) BECAUSE OF HIGH WINDS OR THE ATTITUDE OF THE AIRPLANE.
L.  At this step in the procedure you can lift the fin. All persons in Section 48 must get out of the airplane. Put a person on each line (guy line) on the two sides of the fin.
NOTE: SEE Figure 2-41 FOR DATA ABOUT THE EFFECTS OF THE WIND.
M.  Use the crane to lift the fin very slowly to the necessary height. Make the fin stable with lines (guy lines) when it is free from the airplane. Make sure that you cause no damage to the dorsal fin if you did not do Step 2.
N.  Lower the fin onto some surface (dunnage) of wood beams (or old tires). The sling will put the fin into a horizontal position while you lower it.
