throttle/propeller control, advanced avionics,

superior to equivalent ‘conventional’ products.
Perhaps the greatest step forward has been the
Cirrus’ glass cockpit. Early SR20s were built with
standard analogue flight instrumentation and an
Avidyne multi-function display (MFD). The
Avidyne Entegra primary flight display (PFD) was
subsequently made available as an option but from
the second half of 2003 the full glass cockpit
became standard equipment on all models.

Duluth, Minnesota, on the western end of Lake Superior, has long been an
important grain, timber and iron ore trading port and also site of the natural gas
pipeline into the Mesabi Iron Range. Bob Dylan was born there but in aviation
circles Duluth is best known as the home of Cirrus Design, manufacturer of the
best-selling SR20/22 family of four-seat light aircraft.
the
The light aircraft market has been very
conservative over the years, but Cirrus proved that
technology – the right technology – sells and can
stimulate sales into new markets.
This conservatism was perhaps part of a
vicious circle resulting from the market not knowing
any better and the mainstream manufacturers
being afraid of pushing the envelope because of it.
Light aircraft had always been done that way and
no-one seemed inclined to move too far away from
the safety of conventionality, or even admit it
could be done.
Cirrus changed all that and the others have been
forced to take notice with Cessna, Beech and Piper
all now offering optional glass cockpits for their
otherwise conventional and elderly designs. >>>

Including the surrounding metropolitan area, Duluth has a population of about 250,000.

But things will change eventually. Cessna is
now talking more openly about the new
generation designs it is working on to replace
the venerable 172, 182 and 206.
RAMPING UP
The prototype 200hp (149kW) SR20 first flew
on 31 March 1995 and the first delivery was
in July 1999. The concept was already starting
to catch on because Cirrus had orders for 325
SR20s by then, although many of these were
subsequently switched to the more powerful
310hp (231kW) SR22 which entered service
in February 2001.
A third model – the SRV – was introduced
in 2003, this a ‘budget’ lower-spec SR20
intended for visual flight only. Interestingly,
sales of the SRV have been slow with only 14
delivered by October 2005. Cirrus has found
that most customers who intend buying an

From Oshkosh to Duluth
A MAJOR PART OF THE ADVENTURE of visiting
the Cirrus factory was flying an SR22GTS from the
EAA AirVenture show at Wittman Field, Oshkosh to
Duluth. During show week, Wittman becomes the
busiest aerodrome in the world with an incredible
number of daily movements.
Knowing we would be flying out of and into
Oshkosh, the organisers sent me a copy of the
NOTAM covering the week well in advance. This
was not your single or double sheet of paper but a
comprehensive and highly detailed 30-page booklet
with every possible arrival and departure scenario
covered, complete with appropriate maps, diagrams
and useful advice.
I listened to one of the arrivals frequencies on
the afternoon before our flight to Duluth and at one
stage counted 55 inbound calls during a 10-minute
period – that’s an average of one every 11 seconds
and it didn’t let up.
The controllers were absolutely brilliant as they
dealt with the hordes of ‘weekend warriors’ – and the
occasional ‘pro’ – coming into Oshkosh. They were
