Did you know that four of 48 Cirrus
Standardized Training Centers have
flight training devices (FTD)? Did you know
that those devices have logged 19,000
hours of flight time? It’s true. FTDs offer students
an enhanced tool for learning, enhancing
safety for pilots and passengers. This
service is an opportunity for training centers
to expand their business offerings and
improve the bottom line.
Cirrus Flight Standards is exploring the
possibility of developing a curriculum for use
in FTDs. The objective of this training would
be to expose pilots to experiences they can
not normally attain from airborne flight training.
A Cirrus developed program would
range in scope from flight planning in unfamiliar
areas and minor system malfunctions
to severe weather conditions and serious
emergencies requiring extreme measures.
According to Bill Stone, Cirrus Director
of Flight Standards and Operations, “These
scenarios will prompt students to deal with
situations that they may never experience in
their everyday flying.” Most people realize
that a change in behavior happens as a
result of experience. “Successfully handling
uncommon emergencies in a safe environment
makes a pilot more prepared to handle
them in the real world.”
Cirrus develops detailed Customer
Guides, Instructor Guides, and training scenarios
to provide a consistent and rigorous
learning experience. Bill Stone reports, “We
feel this is a critical component of training
that enables Cirrus pilots to train to an
appropriate level similar to airlines and corporate
flight departments. These groups
have attained the safest flight histories in the
industry, partially due to the use of simulator
based training,”
He says, “We believe that Cirrus owners/
pilots will want to participate in a first
rate training system similar to airline standards
but at a much lower cost. And, in
cooperation with Training Centers, we think
we can offer it.”
