Flight Into Known Icing.
In the case of an Inadvertent Icing Encounter, the Ice Protection System may be used to escape the conditions,
however, closely monitor system function and annunciation for signs of possible distribution line separation:
• If ice begins to accumulate on protected areas, or
• the aircraft experiences an unexpected loss of fluid pressure, indicated by a Low Pressure Caution,
• or, the aircraft experiences unexpected loss of TKS fluid flow, indicated by a Low Flow Rate Warning,
once clear of the icing conditions, turn the Ice Protection System OFF and land as soon as practical. Contact
maintenance personnel to inspect the system for distribution line separation prior to further flight.

2. DESCRIPTION
The following information is being provided to inform operators of a recent event where Teledyne Continental
Motors, Inc. (TCM) verified several instances of rapid wear on the surface of hydraulic lifter units
installed on affected aircraft engines. TCM is investigating the cause of the rapid wear.
TCM obtains its lifters from an outside supplier. In June of 2009, this supplier released new part number
lifters made from castings from a different foundry. To distinguish the change in casting source, these parts
were assigned new part numbers. Specifically, 657913, 657915 and 657916 part numbers were produced
using castings from the new source. Hydraulic lifters designated by part numbers 653877, 653888, and
653906 and earlier (lower) part numbers are not affected.
Operation with worn hydraulic lifters may result in loss of engine power and a potential safety of flight condition
could result. To address this condition, TCM has released Mandatory Service Bulletin MSB09-8.
COMPLIANCE
TCM Mandatory Service Bulletin MSB09-8 requires the hydraulic lifters be replaced before further flight.
WARRANTY
Teledyne Continental Motors will pay labor costs to complete the inspection of engines affected by Mandatory
Service Bulletin MSB09-8. TCM will pay for necessary parts, consumable supplies and labor costs to
remove and replace hydraulic lifter part numbers 657913, 657915 or 657916 and associated repairs
required as a result of installation of said hydraulic lifter part numbers to return the engine to service. Refer
to TCM Mandatory Service Bulletin MSB09-8 for specific details.

Subject: Inspection and Removal of Certain TCM Engine Hydraulic Lifters
Background: Teledyne Continental Motors, Inc. (TCM) has verified several instances of
rapid wear on the surface of hydraulic lifter units (tappets) both in new
and rebuilt engines and hydraulic lifter units sold as spares beginning on
19 June 2009. TCM is investigating the cause of the rapid wear and has
seen it as early as five hours of engine operation after installation. Loss of
engine power and a potential safety of flight issue can result.
TCM obtains its lifters from an outside supplier. In June of 2009, this
supplier released for production new part number lifters made from
castings from a different foundry. To distinguish the change in casting
source, these parts were assigned new part numbers. Specifically, 657913,
