wing controls became disabled, the first time in history a civilian pilot landed a
plane via parachute. That does not mean Cirrus is foolproof. There have been six
fatal accidents — virtually all attributed to pilot error — which have led some
safety experts to conclude that the plane might be attracting pilots who can't
handle the plane's design or speed. The company has taken quick steps to
address accidents, including increased training for new owners.
Cirrus has spent the past three years preparing for takeoff. In 2001 it lined up a
$100 million investment from Crescent Capital, a private firm, to increase
production and expand its selection. "Our key challenge is getting Cirrus' name
on people's shopping lists," says John Bingham, the company's sales chief. It's
working. In July the company sold a remarkable 51 airplanes in one of the
slowest markets in years. And last month Cirrus became the first start-up in the
past 50 years to sell 1,000 planes within four years of its first delivery. Cirrus may
have succeeded in creating a new market. First-time buyers account for almost
40% of sales. "It's an easy plane to fly," adds B ingham. And, Cirrus hopes, to
buy.

Brake Inspection
The brake assemblies and linings should be checked at every oil
change (50 hours) for general condition, evidence of overheating, and
deterioration. Serials 1005 thru 2030 before SB 2X-05-01: At every
annual/100-hour inspection the brakes should be disassembled, the
brake linings should be checked and the O-rings replaced.
The aircraft should not be operated with overheated, damaged, or
leaking brakes. Conditions include, but are not limited to:
• Leaking brake fluid at the caliper. This can be observed by
checking for evidence of fluid on the ground or deposited on the
underside of the wheel fairing. Wipe the underside of the fairing
with a clean, white cloth and inspect for red colored fluid residue.
• Overheated components, indicated by discoloration or warping
of the disk rotor. Excessive heat can cause the caliper
components to discolor or cause yellowing of the part
identification label.
To inspect the brake assemblies:
1. Remove main gear fairing. (Refer to AMM 32-10)
2. Wipe off any debris from brake caliper assembly that may obstruct
inspection.
3. Check brake linings for deterioration and maximum permissible
wear. Replace lining when worn to 0.100 inch (2.54 mm).
4. Locate temperature indicators installed on brake caliper assembly.
5. Verify temperature indicators are firmly adhered to piston housing.
6. If top temperature indicator is white or lower temperature indicator
is white, the brake assembly has not overheated. O-ring
replacement is not necessary.
• Caution •
If either temperature indicator is black, the brake assembly
has overheated. The brake linings must be inspected and the
O-rings replaced.
7. Check brake assemblies for evidence of overheating and/or
deterioration.
8. Install main gear fairing. (Refer to AMM 32-10)
