The price delta for turbocharging
on the SR22 is just under $60,000, but
that includes far more than simply the
twin turbo system. Specifically, the
turbo package comprises the composite,
three-blade, Hartzell prop; the twin
turbonormalizer installation with automatic
wastegate, dual intercoolers, fuel
and engine monitoring (EMax) customized
for the turbo installation; an
automatic alternate air induction system;
built-in oxygen with a 77-cubicfoot
bottle; and appropriate badging.

Cirrus partnered with Avidyne to
offer the innovative Entegra Integrated
Flight Deck system across their entire
line of aircraft. Avidyne scores high
marks for ease of use and its Entegra
EMax engine management system.
If you have a need for turbocharging,
and the higher price doesn’t intimidate
you, the only other consideration
is useful load. There is a penalty
for the talents of a turbo. A standard
turbocharged SR22-G2 weighs 2,418
pounds empty, compared to 2,250
pounds for the normally aspirated airplane.
Both SR22s are certified for a
max gross of 3,400 pounds, so the
turbo gives away 168 pounds of payload,
about one passenger worth.With
a full 81 gallons of fuel aboard, the
Turbo Cirrus can fly away with just
under 500 paying pounds, three passengers
worth.
The Turbo Cirrus’ price has been
set at $509,795, and that includes essentially
everything you could ever want.
Well, okay, not quite everything. You
can also add a 406 MHz EPIRB/ELT
in place of the standard unit, a fanpowered
ventilation system and the
Tailwind Advantage. The latter is a
package of scheduled oil changes,
extended warranty, fuel, headsets, charts
and appearance items collectively worth
over $15,000 and packaged for $5,995.
By the time you read this, Cirrus
will probably be handling new installations
at the Duluth factory, and
Tornado Alley will be performing retrofits
on older SR22s in Ada. Eventually,
Cirrus may simply buy complete turbocharger
kits from Tornado Alley and
assume full installation responsibility
for both new and retrofit projects.
At this stage, the program is in its
infancy and only a handful of airplanes
are flying. “We have orders for about
50 Turbo SR22s right now,” says Alan
Klapmeier, “and indications are that
theremay be hundreds of existing owners
who’ll want to retrofit the system
to their older airplanes.We believe the
Tornado Alley Turbo system is an excellent
way to add performance and safety
to an SR22 at a reasonable price.” PJ

The Turbo Cirrus can climb at a lean-of-peak setting, and it’s possible to reduce the fuel flow immediately after takeoff without any adverse effects.

2. DESCRIPTION
During a recent quality assurance inspection at the Duluth manufacturing plant, a condition was discovered
where the compression fittings on some anti-ice fluid distribution lines may not have been properly
installed. Incorrect installation of compression fittings could result in distribution line separation and FIKI
Anti-Ice System malfunction.
To our knowledge, this condition has not been reported in any field aircraft. Cirrus is developing a Service
Bulletin that will require the inspection and reassembly of affected compression fittings and expects that
the FAA will issue an Airworthiness Directive to require compliance.
Until the Service Bulletin is complied with, Cirrus advises operators; Flight Into Known Icing Conditions is
Prohibited. If the airplane encounters icing conditions immediately exit conditions by changing altitude,
turning back, or if clear air is known to be immediately ahead, continue on course.
Additionally, operators are requested to install a placard to the instrument panel (similar to below) limiting
