C. Bendix/King KT 76C Transponder
Figure 2 shows the Bendix/King KT 76C transponder. It is located in the instrument panel on the
right side at the bottom, see Chapter 31.
The avionics bus or, if installed, the essential avionics bus supplies power to the transponder. The
ALT/BAT switch and the AVIONICS MASTER switch must be set to ON to supply power through
the XPDR circuit-breaker to the transponder. Refer to Chapter 92 for the wiring diagrams.
The transponder has a display which shows the following:
) Altitude window. The flight level altitude, marked by the letters 'FL' and a number in hundreds
of feet, is shown on the left side of the display.
) Code window. The mode A code set by the code selector knobs is shown on the right side of
the display.
) Reply indicator. The reply indicator blinks to indicate that the KT 76C is functioning properly and
replying to interrogations.
The transponder has these controls:
) OFF/SBY/ON/ALT/TST function selector. Turn fully counter-clockwise to turn the transponder
OFF. Turn the function selector switch clockwise to set the transponder ON. There is a 45
second delay after setting the unit ON from OFF to let the transmitter tube warm-up. The
function selector switch has these positions:
) SBY. Sets the transponder to the standby position. The transponder receives signals but
does not transmit.
) ON. If the transponder receives a mode A interrogation, it transmits the mode A code set by
the code selector knobs. You can set any code between 0000 and 7777.
) ALT. If the transponder receives a mode C interrogation, it transmits the altitude data from
the blind encoder.
) TST. Use this position to test the equipment.
) IDT (ident) button. Push this button momentarily to transmit a coded signal to Air Traffic Control.
The unit will transmit a special identification pulse for each interrogation over the next 18
seconds. The 'reply' indicator will be displayed continuously during this time. You must only
press this button at the request of Air Traffic Control.

) CODE selector knobs. Use these knobs to enter the mode A code.
) CLR button. Code entry mistakes are corrected, one digit at a time by pressing the CLR button
and re-entering the correct code. The last active code will be displayed if a complete four-digit
code has not been entered and there is no activity on any of the code entry buttons, the VFR
button, or the CLR button for four seconds.

typically 7000, in the code window. Pressing and holding the VFR button for two seconds will
cause the last active code to be displayed.
D. Garmin GTX 327 Transponder
Figure 3 shows the Garmin GTX 327 transponder. It is located in the instrument panel on the right
side at the bottom, see Chapter 31.
The avionics bus or, if installed, the essential avionics bus supplies power to the transponder. The
ALT/BAT switch (Lycoming version) or ELECTRIC MASTER key switch (TAE version) and the
AVIONIC MASTER switch must be set to ON to supply power through the XPDR circuit-breaker
to the transponder.
