diagrams.
The strike finder system consists of the following items:
) Strike finder display.
) Strike finder sensor.
2. Description and Operation
The strike finder detects and analyzes the electrical activity emanating from thunderstorms within a
200 nautical mile (nm) radius of the airplane.
The Insight strike finder SF 2000 consists of a display and a sensor. The display employs a digital
signal processor which, among other components, processes and displays the signal detected by the
sensor.
A. Strike Finder Display
Figure 1 shows the Insight strike finder display. It is located on the left side of the avionics rack in
the instrument panel, see Chapter 31.
The avionics bus supplies power to the strike finder display. The ALT/BAT switch and the AVIONIC
MASTER switch must be set to ON to supply power through the STRIKE circuit breaker to the strike
finder display. Refer to Chapter 92 for the wiring diagrams.

Figure 1: Insight Strike Finder, SF 2000
The strike finder display has these controls and displays:
) 30-degree Azimuth Marker - helps to identify the location of thunderstorms relative to the
airplane's intended track.
) Outer Range Ring - is the outer boundary of viewable strike data within the selected range. (for
example: 200 nm, 100 nm, 50 nm, 25 nm)
) Half Range Ring - is half the distance from the airplane to the outer range ring, for the selected
range.
) Strike Data - is plotted on the display as bright orange dots to indicate the location, range and
severity of detected lightning activity.
) Range Indicators - are used to show the current viewing range selected. They indicate the
distance from the airplane to the outer range ring.
) Range Cursor - highlights one of the four range indicators to show selected range view (defaults
to 200 nm).
) Alphanumeric Indicator - appears as large digits in the lower left quadrant of the display.
Provides readout of range selection, Time Travel function and troubleshooting codes.

) Airplane Symbol - represents your airplane.
) Ultra Bright LED or Gas Plasma Display - consists of a 2.5-inch diameter viewable area. It
displays strike data and status messages with bright orange dots against a black background.
) Automatic Test Status Annunciator - appears in the center of the display as a 'Walking Dot',
which moves in a clockwise direction. The presence of this dot means the strike finder has
successfully passed all automatic diagnostic tests.
) Zoom-In/Zoom-Out Buttons - permit the operator to step through the range selections (25-50-
100 & 200 nm), smoothly altering the distances viewed on the display.
) Time Travel Button - allows the pilot to display recent strike data history - compressing about
one hour of storm activity into a one minute presentation.
) Clear Display Button - clears the display of all dots but does not erase the strike data history
employed by the Time Travel function.
B. Strike Finder Sensor
The Insight strike finder sensor is located behind the COM #2 antenna. The sensor contains
sensitive circuit to detect magnetic energy and convey the direction and magnitude of such energy
to the display for actual depiction to the pilot.

Trouble-Shooting
1. General
The table below lists the defects you could have with the strike finder System. If you have the trouble
detailed in the Trouble column read across to the Possible Cause column. Then do the repair given
in the Repair column.
Trouble Possible Cause Repair
Strike finder display does not
operate.
Circuit-breaker not set.
Faulty strike finder display.
Faulty cables/connectors.
Set the circuit-breaker.
Repair or replace the strike
finder display.
Do a test for continuity on each
cable. Do a test for short circuit
to ground and between cables.
Replace defective cables.
Note: The display is reverse-polarity protected, and contains a self-resetting fuse. If
the fuse trips from overload or reverse polarity, it will require several seconds
to reset itself.
Display 'Sunburst Test' shows
blank lines or blank pixels.
The display has a driver or
connection fault.
