Automatic Direction Finder (ADF)
1. General
This Section tells you about the automatic direction finder (ADF) system that can be installed in the
DA 40. Refer to the manufacturer's manuals for more data about the equipment. Refer to Chapter 92
for the wiring diagrams.
The ADF system consists of the following items:
) ADF receiver.
) ADF indicator (slaved or non-slaved).
) ADF antenna.
The audio panel controls the audio input from the ADF (refer to Section 23-50).
2. Description and Operation
The ADF gives bearing information, ground station identification, and reception of weather broadcasts
in the AM band.
A. ADF Receiver
Figure 1 shows the Bendix/King KR 87 ADF receiver. It is located in the avionics rack in the
instrument panel, see Chapter 31.
The avionics bus supplies power to the ADF receiver. The ALT/BAT switch (Lycoming version) or
ELECTRIC MASTER key switch (TAE version) and the AVIONIC MASTER switch must be set to
ON to supply power through the ADF circuit-breaker to the ADF receiver. Refer to Chapter 92 for
the wiring diagrams.
The Bendix/King KR 87 is a compact, digitally-tuned, solid-state ADF receiver with built-in
electronics timer. It gives bearing information to stations in the 200 kHz to 1799 kHz frequency
