) The VNAV (vertical navigation) key (9) (GNS 530 only) allows you to create a three-dimensional
profile which guides you to a final (target) altitude at a specific location.
) The FPL (flight plan) key (10) allows you to create, edit, activate and invert flight plans, as well
as access approaches, departures and arrivals. A closest point to flight plan feature is also
available from the flight plan key.
) The MSG (message) key (11) is used to view system messages and to alert you to important
warnings and requirements.
) The OBS key (12) is used to select manual or automatic sequencing of waypoints. Pressing the
OBS key selects OBS mode, which will retain the current 'active to' waypoint as your navigation
reference even after passing the waypoint (i.e., prevents sequencing to the next waypoint).
Pressing the OBS key again will return to normal operation, with automatic sequencing of
waypoints. Whenever OBS mode is selected, you may set the desired course to/from a waypoint
using the OBS Page, or an external OBS selector on your HSI.
) The CDI key (13) is used to toggle which navigation source (GPS or VLOC) provides output to
the HSI or CDI.

E. MD 41 GPS Annunciation Control Unit
Figure 6 shows the Mid Continent MD 41 GPS annunciation control unit. It is installed in the lefthand
section of the instrument panel, see Chapter 31.
The MD 41 is a self-contained GPS annunciation and control unit. Figure 4 shows how the MD 41
works. The information from either the NAV 1 (VOR) receiver or the GPS receiver can be switched
to the data inputs of the HSI (refer to Section 34-28). In addition, this navigation information is also
used for the KAP 140 autopilot, if the autopilot is installed (refer to Chapter 22).
An ILS override feature automatically switches to the NAV mode when the NAV 1 receiver is tuned
to an ILS frequency.
The MD 41 contains several GPS status annunciations used to indicate modes selected by the front
panel switches and various inputs from the GPS receiver.
Any time power is removed or turned off, or in the event off a power failure of the MD 41, the MD 41
turns automatically to the 'Emergency Mode'. In this mode the HSI (see Section 34-28) is
connected directly to NAV 1.
The GPS annunciation control unit has the following annunciations:
) NAV. It indicates that NAV 1 (VOR) information is being presented on the HSI.
) GPS. It indicates that GPS information is being presented on the HSI.
) ARM. It indicates that the GPS is armed for automatic transition to approach mode.
) ACTV. It indicates that the GPS is actively engaged in the approach mode.
) MSG. It indicates that there is a GPS message alert from the GPS receiver.
) WPT. It indicates that there is a GPS waypoint alert from the GPS receiver.
The GPS annunciation control unit has these controls:
) NAV/GPS button. It switches between NAV 1 (VOR) or GPS presentation on the HSI.
) GPS/APR button. It arms the GPS Approach Mode.
) LAMP TEST button. It is used for testing the annunciation lamps.
