A. Bendix/King KI 208 CDI
Figure 1 shows the Bendix/King KI 208 course deviation indicator. It is located in the left-hand
section of the instrument panel, see Chapter 31.
The KI 208 receives electrical power from the NAV/COM unit.
The KI 208 indicator receives a composite signal from the navigation receiver which is part of the
NAV/COM unit. The KI 208 converts the composite signal into DC signals that operate the CDI and
TO-OFF-FROM meters.
The CDI has these features:
) VOR/LOC/LNAV deviation bar. The VOR/LOC/LNAV needle deflection indicates the amount of
deviation from the selected VOR/LNAV course or localizer path. The indicated deviation is
toward the proper flight path in normal operation. Crosstrack deviation is linear during LNAV
operation, and angular in VOR operation.
) TO/FROM flag. It indicates the direction 'To' or 'From' the VOR station or LNAV waypoint.
) Warning flag. It shows when the VOR or LOC signal is not reliable. It also shows if the
NAV/COM unit has malfunctioned.
) OBS knob. The OBS (omni bearing selector) knob turns the azimuth card. You set the azimuth
card to a bearing that the VOR course can be compared with. The reciprocal course is shown
below the bottom course index marker.
Localizer circuits are automatically energized when an ILS frequency is selected on the NAV. By
adjusting the NAV volume level, the localizer station can be identified and in some cases, ATIS
information received. The localizer flag should disappear from view into the 'To' condition, indicating
the signal is reliable.

B. Garmin GI 106A CDI
Figure 2 shows the Garmin GI 106A course deviation indicator. It is located in the left-hand section
of the instrument panel, see Chapter 31.
The GI 106A receives electrical power from the NAV/COM/GPS 2 unit.
The GI 106A accepts DC Left-Right, To-From and Left-Right (VOR/LOC) warning flag signals from
a remote mounted VOR converter or GPS receiver. Additionally, the GI 106A accepts DC signals
from a glideslope receiver which will drive the Up-Down needle along with an Up-Down
(Glideslope) warning flag. The unit incorporates NAV, GPS and VLOC (VOR/LOC as displayed on
the Garmin GNS 430) annunciation with photocell dimming.
The CDI has these features:
) VOR/LOC deviation bar. The VOR/LOC needle deflection indicates the amount of deviation from
the selected VOR course or localizer path. The indicated deviation is toward the proper flight
path in normal operation.
) VOR/LOC (Left-Right) warning flag. The warning flag is in view when the VOR/LOC data is
unusable.
) Glideslope deviation bar. Represents the actual airplane deviation from the glideslope path. The
indicated deviation is toward the proper glideslope path.
) Glideslope warning flag. The warning flag is in view when the glideslope data is unusable.
) TO/FROM indicator. It indicates the direction 'To' or 'From' the VOR station.
) OBS knob. The OBS (omni bearing selector) knob turns the azimuth card. You set the azimuth
card to a bearing that the VOR course can be compared with.
) Annunciators. To aid the pilot in determining the source of displayed navigation data, the GI
106A includes three annunciators on its face: GPS, VLOC and NAV. The navigation source is
selected on the front panel of NAV/COM/GPS unit. When GPS is selected, the GPS annunciator
should also light on the GI 106A. Likewise, if VLOC (VOR/Localizer/Glideslope) is selected, the
VLOC annunciator should also light on the GI 106A. The NAV annunciator is not connected in
the DA 40 installation.

Trouble-Shooting
1. General
The table below lists the defects you could have with the VOR/LOC/GS system. If you have the trouble
detailed in the Trouble column read across to the Possible Cause column. Then do the repair given
in the Repair column.
Note: In the table below, 'VOR/LOC instrument' can mean the CDI or HSI, depending on
which instrument is installed.
