3. Operation
The vacuum pump reduces the air pressure in the system. Air flows into the air filter. It flows to the
directional gyro. In the directional gyro it passes through a nozzle and operates a small turbine. The
outlet from the turbine flows to the vacuum pump.
The suction gauge connects to the main flow in the directional gyro. The gauge shows the vacuum
(suction) at the inlet to the gyro.

Trouble-Shooting
1. General
The table below lists the defects you could have with the vacuum system. If you have the trouble
detailed in the Trouble column read across to the Possible Cause column. Then do the repair given
in the Repair column.

Maintenance Practices
1. General
The maintenance practices for the vacuum system tell you how to remove/install the components of
the vacuum system. They also tell you how to adjust the vacuum regulator.
2. Remove/Install the Vacuum Regulator
A. Remove the Vacuum Regulator
Detail Steps/Work Items Key Items/References
% (1) Remove the engine cowlings. Refer to Section 71-11.
% (2) Disconnect the airplane main battery. Refer to Section 24-34.
(3) Clean the area around the regulator outlet.
(4) Release the pipe to the vacuum regulator. At the firewall.
Put a cap on the regulator outlet.
(5) Remove the instrument panel cover. Refer to Section 25-10.
(6) Release the flexible hose from the vacuum
regulator.
Refer to Figure 2.
Put a cap on the regulator inlet.
Put caps on the hose ends.
(7) Remove the nut that attaches the regulator to the
firewall.
In the engine compartment.
(8) Remove the regulator from the airplane.

B. Install the Vacuum Regulator
Detail Steps/Work Items Key Items/References
(1) Put the regulator in position on the firewall. On the aft face of the firewall.
(2) Install the nut that attaches the regulator to the
firewall.
In the engine compartment.
(3) Connect the pipe from the pump to the regulator.
(4) Connect the flexible hose from the directional
gyro to the vacuum regulator.
On the aft face of the firewall.
(5) Connect the airplane main battery. Refer to Section 24-34.
(6) Install the engine cowlings. Refer to Section 71-11.
(7) Do an engine idle run. Check suction gauge. The gauge should indicate 4.7 ± 0.1
inHg. If necessary, adjust the system.
(8) Install the instrument panel cover. Refer to Section 25-10.

3. Replace the Vacuum System Air Filter
Detail Steps/Work Items Key Items/References
(1) Remove the instrument panel cover. Refer to Section 25-10.
(2) Release the flexible hose from the filter. Refer to Figure 2.
(3) Remove the nut and washer that attach the filter
to the instrument panel floor.
(4) Remove the filter.
(5) Put the new filter in position on the instrument
panel floor.
(6) Install the washer and nut that attach the filter.
(7) Connect the flexible hose to the filter.
(8) Do an engine idle run. Check suction gauge. The gauge should indicate 4.7 ± 0.1
